Norfolk Tides News Release
Jim Johnson allowed one run in 6.1 innings, pitching the Tides to a 3-1 win over the Syracuse Chiefs Friday night.
Johnson (4-7) scattered seven hits in the outing, walking one and striking out three. The 24-year-old allowed just a solo home run by John-Ford Griffin in the 6th inning to help Norfolk pick up its 13th win in 19 games.
Norfolk got out to a quick lead in the contest in the bottom of the first, as J.R. House doubled off of Syracuse starter Mike MacDonald (2-6) and came around to score on a single by Mike Cervenak.
The Tides extended their lead to 3-0 in the second frame, courtesy of back-to-back two-out singles by Luis Hernandez and Tike Redman.
Redman finished 2-for-4 with an RBI in the contest, extending his hitting streak to 12 games.
Norfolk reliever Jim Hoey relieved Johnson with 1.2 scoreless innings, and Tides' closer Cory Doyne worked a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his 23rd save in 24 chances this season. Doyne has now thrown 25.1 consecutive scoreless innings, and his 23rd save moved him into a tie for second on the Tides' single season saves list, equalling Oscar Henriquez' 23 saves in 1999. Norfolk's franchise record is 26 saves by Derek Wallace in 1996.
MacDonald went 7.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out four without walking a batter.
Russ Adams paced Syracuse's offense with three hits.
Norfolk and Syracuse continue their four-game set with a 6:15 contest Sunday night. Southpaw Craig Anderson (1-1, 6.17) takes the hill for the Tides, with right-hander Ty Taubenheim (3-5, 5.63) slated to take the mound for the Chiefs.
