Louisville Bats News Release

LOUISVILLE, Ky.-Phil Dumatrait continued his dominance at Louisville Slugger Field with a season-high eight strikeouts on Saturday evening, and the Louisville Bats beat Columbus 4-1 in front of 11,709 in attendance.

Dumatrait (8-5) improved to 6-1 in nine starts at the friendly confines in 2007. He gave up three hits in six innings, while walking only three Clippers. Gary Majewski picked up his first save of the season after pitching a perfect ninth inning.

The Bats (43-39) started the scoring in the second inning when Clippers second baseman Bernie Castro threw the ball over the first baseman's head while Jeff Bannon scored from third base. Louisville added the eventual game-winning run in the fourth when Bannon hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Aaron Herr.

Columbus (38-44) threatened in the top of the seventh inning, loading the bases with one out for Bats reliever Brian Shackelford. The 30-year old from McAlester, Okla. delivered by forcing a one-run fielder's choice and catching a stealing Abraham Nunez from third base.

Louisville shortstop Pedro Lopez, batting leadoff for the second time this season, finished the evening going 3-for-4 with a pair of singles, a ground rule double and a run in the seventh inning to conclude the Bats scoring attack.

Third baseman Kory Casto went 3-for-4 with three singles and a strikeout for the Clippers, who stranded 14 runners on base in the game. Starting pitcher Chris Michalak (3-3) allowed one earned run off sevens hits in six innings of work.

The Bats will play the second and final game of the series at 6:15 p.m. on Sunday evening. RHP Tom Shearn (3-6, 4.70 ERA) for Louisville and RHP Emiliano Fruto (3-4, 4.05 ERA) for Columbus are the probables.
