Bisons Notes

June 30, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

TODAY'S GAME: Tonight, the Buffalo Bisons take on the Rochester Red Wings in the first game of a four-game home-and-home series that begins at Frontier Field (7:05 p.m.). After tomorrow's game, the series will shift to Dunn Tire Park on Monday and Tuesday. On the mound tonight for Buffalo will be LHP Aaron Laffey. The southpaw has won five straight, including a seven-inning effort on Monday against Norfolk. The Red Wings will counter with LHP Dave Gassner.

VS. THE WINGS: The Bisons are 2-2 against Rochester this season, having split a four-game home-and-home series with the Wings, May 11-14. Buffalo won both of the games played at Frontier Field in that series.

NORTHERN LEADERS: The Bisons have been in first place in the IL North division since May 5 (57 consecutive days). The Herd is currently 2-1 in a seven-game stretch against the third place Yankees and the second place Red Wings.

HE'S NO JOKE: LHP Aaron Laffey can become the first pitcher in the Modern Era to win six games in a month. The southpaw is 5-0 with a 0.82ERA this June, allowing just three earned runs in 33.0 innings. He has also has posted more strikeouts (29) than hits allowed (24) this month. The last Bisons pitcher to win five games in a month was Tim Drew (5-1, May 2002).

BULLY FOR THE PEN: The Bisons bullpen has been downright filthy of late. The pen worked 11.2 innings without allowing an earned run in the three-game series against Scranton/WB. In the last 10 games, the bullpen has posted a 0.26ERA with only 21 hits allowed in 34.1 innings (3R, 1ER, 9BB, 30K).

HOMER HERO: Infielder Andy Marte hit his eighth home run of the season last night. That ties him with Luis Rivas, Brad Snyder and Keith Ginter for second on the team. All-Star infielder Ryan Mulhern leads the Herd with 11 long balls this year.

CLOSE WIN: With last night's win, the Bisons improved to 13-9 in one-run games and 4-2 in games decided by extra-innings. It was the eighth time this year the Herd won a game in their last at-bats.

TRIBE UPDATE: In his first Major League start, former Bisons outfielder Ben Francisco hit a ninth-inning walk-off home run as the Indians defeated Tampa Bay, 2-1, last night. It was Francisco's second M.L. hit as he also singled in the game (2-4).
