14,045 watch Tribe rally for 5-4 win over Braves
June 30, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Right fielder Brad Eldred blooped a two-run single with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give Indianapolis a 5-4 win over Richmond in front of 14,045 Saturday evening at Victory Field.
The Indians improve to 45-36 on the season and 25-14 at home, while the Braves fall to 45-35 overall and 27-17 on the road. The Tribe continues to lead the International League's Wild Card race by 2.5 games over Rochester, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Louisville.
Indianapolis scored three times in the seventh after trailing by two at stretch time. SS Luis Ordaz and PH Einar Diaz drew back-to-back walks before moving into scoring position on a groundout. Ordaz scored moments later on 2B Brian Bixler's single to center, while Diaz and LF Michael Ryan came plateward on Eldred's base knock over the shortstop's head.
Indians RHP Franquelis Osoria (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 SO) nailed it down from there, allowing just one baserunner over the final two frames for his eighth save of the campaign.
The rally came after Richmond scored all four of its runs in the fifth. LF Doug Clark hammered a double to right before SS Brent Lillibridge put runners at the corners with a single to the same spot. The Braves then plated their first run on a double steal.
Lillibridge scored moments later -- on PH Brayan Pena's RBI groundout -- to knot the affair at two. Richmond then took the lead on CF Gregor Blanco's double to right before adding another run on 2B Martin Prado's two-bagger to center.
Indianapolis scored a pair of early runs to take a 2-0 lead. 3B Jose Hernandez crushed his eighth roundtripper of the year in the second, while CF Luis Matos smoked his team-leading 19th double to plate Ordaz in the third.
Seven Indians cracked the hit column en route to 13 base knocks for the night. C Humberto Cota collected three singles, while Bixler, Hernandez, Eldred and Ordaz recorded two hits apiece.
Braves RHP Jeff Bennett (0.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB) was pinned with the loss, falling to 0-3. Prado notched Richmond's only multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Neither starter -- Indians RHP Bryan Bullington (5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) or Braves RHP Lance Cormier (4.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO) -- figured in the decision.
The near-capacity crowd was the Tribe's largest of 2007 and sixth of over 10,000 in the month of June.
The two teams wrap up the brief two-game series on Sunday at 2 p.m. RHP Kip Bouknight is scheduled to make his Indians debut, while RHP Blaine Boyer is expected to get the nod for the Braves.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 1:40 p.m.
