Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Rico Noel had a five-hit night and Connor Powers drove in three runs as the TinCaps rolled to a 7-2 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts, Saturday at Parkview Field.
RHP Keyvius Sampson delivered five solid innings on the mound to pick up his first win since July 11. The game was stopped by a one-hour, 22-minute rain delay in the fifth inning.
Prior to this season, the last five-hit game for a Fort Wayne hitter came in August 2007. Noel and Rymer Liriano have both achieved the feat this year.
The TinCaps struck early; Noel led off the first inning with a double and went to third on Cory Spangenberg's infield hit. A balk by Lansing RHP Tyler Powell brought Noel in to score and two batters later Powers drilled a double off the wall in left-center to make it 2-0.
In the fourth, Lansing plated an unearned run against Sampson. K.C. Hobson led off with a double, went to third on a bunt hit by Oliver Dominguez and scored when the throw to first was errant.
Fort Wayne pieced together a two-out rally in the sixth. Powers roped a double and Wes Cunningham followed with an RBI single to center to push the lead to 3-1.
Lance Durham smacked a solo home run in the top of the seventh to pull the Lugnuts to within a run, but the TinCaps blew it open in the bottom of the inning. Rocky Gale led off with an infield hit. An error on a bunt allowed Chris Bisson to reach, then Noel and Spangenberg rapped back- to-back RBI singles. Three batters later, Powers blooped a two-out, two-run single to left to make it 7-2.
Sampson (9-2) struck out six and allowed the unearned run in five innings to snatch the win. Powell (2-3) was charged with the loss.
The TinCaps upped their record to 21-20 in the half, 51-59 for the season. Lansing dipped to 25-16 since the all-star break, 63-45 on the year.
The TinCaps and Lugnuts (Class-A Toronto Blue Jays) continue the four-game series Sunday at 3:05 p.m. TinCaps LHP Todd Privett (1-2) takes the ball opposite Lansing LHP Egan Smith (5-4).
