South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - For the second time in as many nights, South Bend Silver Hawks second baseman Gerson Montilla provided the decisive blow in a Silver Hawks victory. The latest effort was a two out, two run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Hawks a 3-2 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Saturday evening.

Friday night, Montilla put the Hawks ahead in Lansing with a three run homer in the top of the sixth inning. The stakes were a little bit higher on Saturday, as the Hawks had managed only one run and were down to their final out in the eighth. He took the 0-1 pitch from Chris Rearick (BS, 5) to the wall in left-center, scoring David Narodowski and Matt Helm who had both singled against Nate Garcia (LP, 2-3).

The late rally got South Bend starter Jeff Shields (ND) off the hook for a loss he wouldn't have deserved. Shields turned in his eighth quality start out of his last nine outings, permitting only two runs and four hits over 7.0 innings

Helm had two hits and a RBI for South Bend and Roberto Ortiz extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a double in the fifth inning.

Bowling Green was led by Phil Wunderlich with a homer and a single, while Julio Cedeno added a RBI single.

Hot Rods starter Wilking Rodriguez (ND) threw 4.0 scoreless and hitless innings as he works back from a shoulder injury.

The Silver Hawks and Hot Rods continue the series with game two on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM Eastern Time. RHP Bradin Hagens (6-4, 3.87 ERA) will start for South Bend against RHP George Jensen (10-4, 4.86 ERA) for the Hot Rods. Pre-game coverage begins at 1:40 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
