
River Bandits edge Kernels, 3-2

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Quad Cities edged the Kernels 3-2 on Friday night at Perfect Game Field, taking three out of four in the series. Quad Cities scored a run in the 3rd inning to take a 1-0 lead. With one out and the bases loaded, Cody Stanley reached on an error by Kernels second baseman Rolando Gomez. Kolten Wong was able to score on the play, giving the River Bandits the early lead.
The River Bandits added to their lead in the 4th inning when Colin Walsh homered to right center, giving Quad Cities a 2-0 lead. Quad Cities scored again in the 6th inning, taking a 3-0 lead. Walsh scored when Wong reached on Gomez's second fielding error of the night.
Justin La Tempa (2-6) took the loss for the Kernels. He started and went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits. He struck out four and walked three. Beau Brooks pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out three and walking one. Donn Roach went 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out one.
The Kernels scored their two runs with two outs in the 7th inning. Jarrod Parks began the rally by drawing a walk. Francis Larson followed with a single, sending Parks to third base. Larson went to second base on a wild pitch. Jean Almanzar brought them both home with a single up the middle, cutting the Quad Cities lead to 3-2.
Zach Russell (6-8) picked up the win for Quad Cities. He went 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four and walking two. Angel De Jesus picked up his fourth save of the year, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out two.
The Kernels now begin a seven day road trip with games in Peoria and a commuter series at Clinton. The four game series at Peoria against the Chiefs begins on Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. The Kernels return home on Saturday, August 13th vs. Kane County at 6:35 p.m.
