No Luck for the Generals in Kitchener Tonight
January 16, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Oshawa Generals News Release
The Generals paid a visit to Kitchener tonight to take on the Rangers for the second time this season. The first time these two teams met in October, Oshawa took the 4-3 win but the Rangers got even tonight with a final score of 3-2. Brent Pedersen, a former Kitchener Rangers player, made his first appearance in his old arena since being traded to the Generals earlier this month.
It was a physical first period from both sides. The first shot for the Generals came from Kenny Huether, which managed to make it past Dawson Carty. With a one-goal lead six minutes into the first, the Generals stayed strong defensively. A holding call to Sonny Hertzberg gave the Rangers a one-man advantage but the Generals took away time and space and held onto their lead. Adam Mascherin had two close scoring opportunities on Appleby but was unable to split the difference. With a minute remaining in the first, Cole Cassels went to the box for interference and made it five on four for Kitchener. The Generals fought off the first half of the penalty by the end of the first period. After the whistle, Josh Brown and Max Lafrate dropped the gloves for an evenly matched tilt. Although it was a physical period, the Generals only registered four goals on net, while the Rangers managed eight.
The Generals entered the second period a man short with Cassels sitting for another minute. However, their aggressive penalty kill made it impossible for the Rangers to get on the board. The Rangers didn't let up there and at 13:27, Connor Bunnaman tied the game up with a rebound goal on Appleby. The Rangers kept their momentum and less than a minute and a half later, made it 2-1 for with a goal by Ryan MacInnis. The first and much needed power play for the Generals came after Liam Maaskant was called for cross checking with just over a minute remaining in the second. The power play didn't last long as Cassels was sent to the box at 19:23 for holding. With seven seconds to go in the second, Brandon Robinson tipped the puck past Appleby to make 3-1 for the Rangers. After putting up three goals in the second period, the Rangers ended the period with 12 goals on net, while the Generals tallied six.
Less than two minutes into the third, Michael McCarron and Liam Maaskant dropped the gloves after McCarron took a big hit. Both players received five minute for fighting but McCarron was given an extra two for instigating. The Rangers power play didn't last long as David Miller was called for boarding to make it four on four. The Generals started to put some pressure on with a couple chances on Carty but could not seem to get another goal on the board for the majority of the period. At 14:41, Michael Dal Colle and Cassels got the puck to Chris Carlisle who narrowed the Rangers lead to one. Appleby went to the bench with two minutes left, and Stephen Desrocher put a shot on Carty that was somehow stopped. Despite a close comeback late in the third, the Rangers held onto their lead and took the 3-2 win.
The Generals head to Belleville tomorrow for their second of three games this weekend. They will be back at the GM Centre on Sunday, Jan. 18 when they take on the Barrie Colts at 6:05 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by clicking here, visiting the GM Centre Box Office, or calling 1-877-436-8811.
