Saginaw Spirit News Release
The Saginaw Spirit took the ice against the Sudbury Wolves Friday night after a tough road loss to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Wednesday. The Spirit were looking to gain a win on home ice while entertaining an energetic crowd. The team was able to do just that, taking down the Sudbury Wolves in a 4-1 victory at the Dow Event Center.
The Saginaw Spirit turned in a solid first period, putting two goals past Sudbury's starting goaltender Troy Timpano. Blake Clarke returned to the ice for the Spirit after recovering from an early season injury and opened the game's scoring at 10:35 of the period. Vladislav Kodola set up a nice pass to Clarke who finished off the play and made it 1-0 game over the Wolves. Minutes later Devon Paliani followed suit and rifled home his 5th goal of the season at 11:58, cushioning the Saginaw lead over Sudbury. Greg Di Tomaso and Kodola assisted the play. The Spirit went through two successful penalty kills, holding off Sudbury until the buzzer sounded for the end of the first period. Saginaw outshined Sudbury in shots on net, outshooting the Wolves 17-9.
Connor Brown kept the puck rolling for the Spirit in the second period, putting up the only tally during the 20 minutes of play on his 16th goal of the season. Artem Artemov was able to set up Brown for the shot that made it a 3-0 game over the Wolves. The score remained at 3-0 thanks to some excellent goaltending by Saginaw's starting goaltender Evan Cormier. Saginaw continued to dominate Sudbury in shots on goal during the second period, leading the Wolves 12-8.
The third period found both teams in a back and forth affair, with both Sudbury and Saginaw recording a tally. The Spirit struck first in the third at 4:49 on Jesse Barwell's 7th goal of the season. Both Greg Di Tomaso and Jacob Ringuette were credited with assists on the play. Sudbury eventually netted a late third period goal at the 16:42 mark. Kyle Capobianco recorded the lone goal of the evening for the Wolves with the help of Chad Heffernan to bring the Sudbury deficit to three. The Spirit's offensive output and strong defensive play provided a Saginaw victory over Sudbury 4-1, with the Spirit outshooting the Wolves 44-29.
The Saginaw Spirit will be back at the Dow Event Center on Saturday, January 17th as they play host to the Guelph Storm. Puck is scheduled to drop at 7:11 p.m.
