North Bay Battalion News Release

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Ryan Kujawinski scored at 3:50 of overtime to lift the North Bay Battalion to a 4-3 comeback victory over the Niagara IceDogs in Ontario Hockey League action Friday night.

Kujawinski buried the rebound of a Mike Amadio shot at the goalmouth as the Battalion, which trailed three times, bounced back from a 2-1 loss via shootout to the visiting Barrie Colts on Thursday night. The goal was Kujawinski's 17th of the season and fourth since joining the Troops in a Jan. 5 trade from the Kingston Frontenacs.

Amadio scored at 19:18 of the third period to tie it 3-3 and also provided two assists. Kyle Wood contributed one goal and one assist and Hampus Olsson also scored for the Battalion, which moved its won-lost-extended record to 21-10-8 for 50 points, second in the Central Division. Goaltender Jake Smith faced 28 shots.

"It was huge," said Wood. "Losing in a shootout to Barrie was tough, and we wanted to come in here and get a big two points. We felt we played well during the first and second periods even though we were down one, but we just believed in ourselves and played our systems and we did that in the third."

Billy Jenkins had one goal and one assist for Niagara, which also got goals from Brendan Perlini and Graham Knott. Goaltender Brent Moran faced 38 shots before an announced crowd of 4,388 at the Meridian Centre.

Niagara is 17-21-3 for 37 points, fourth in the division. The IceDogs had won their previous five games since a 3-2 setback Dec. 31 to the visiting Peterborough Petes.

The Troops trailed 2-1 in the third period before Olsson's first career OHL goal tied it 2-2 at 1:34. Alex Henriksson outmuscled Vince Dunn for the puck along the boards and sent the disc toward the net. Moran made the save, but the rebound went right to Olsson, who converted from the slot.

Knott put Niagara back in front at 14:20, nine seconds after the Troops finished killing a penalty. Jordan Maletta took a pass from Jenkins behind the goal line and fed Knott, who fired the puck over Smith's left shoulder.

Smith was on the bench for a sixth attacker when Amadio tied it with his 19th goal of the season. Wood put the puck toward the net from the right point, and the disc caromed off Kujawinski and Ray Huether before landing on the stick of Amadio, who directed it past Moran.

Perlini opened the scoring at 7:11 of the first period, snapping home a Josh Ho-Sang feed.

The Troops took advantage of back-to-back penalties to Niagara, tying it on the power play at 11:16 when Wood one-timed a Brenden Miller pass over Moran's glove from the top of the left-wing circle. The goal was defenceman Wood's 11th.

Jenkins struck at 11:55 of the second period when he redirected a Christopher Paquette shot between Smith's pads.

Jenkins was part of a skirmish 43 seconds earlier, when Miller was whistled for a head check after he hit Jenkins in the shoulder, dislodging his helmet. Maletta challenged Miller and, after a brief grappling match, both players received fighting majors, with Maletta also cited for instigating.

The Troops tested Moran several times among their eight shots, but he turned away a Huether drive in the fifth minute, denied a Nick Paul attempt from the left circle in the 10th and slid to deny a Mike Baird shot in the 18th.

The Battalion visits the Erie Otters at 7 p.m. Saturday. The game can be heard live in North Bay on Country 600 CKAT.
