No Foolin' - Steelheads Shut out Aces
April 2, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID (4/1/2015) - Zack Kamrass scored his first two professional goals and Olivier Roy returned to the Idaho crease with a 20-save shutout on Wednesday night as the Idaho Steelheads defeated the Alaska Aces, 5-0, in front of 3,251 fans at CenturyLink Arena in Boise.
With the win, Idaho (46-17-6, 98 points) moved to within one point of formally clinching the ECHL's Pacific Division title and two points away from the team's second 100-point season in the ECHL era. Idaho has three games left in the regular season, all at home, beginning Friday against the Colorado Eagles. Game time is 7:10 PM and tickets can be purchased online at www.idahosteelheads.com.
The game's first shot on net didn't occur until the 4:58 mark of the first period but Idaho made its first puck on net count. Jefferson Dahl created a loose puck in the high slot that was gathered by David deKastrozza. deKastrozza veered to the top of the right-wing circle at the 5:58 mark of the first period and fired a wrist shot past Alaska netminder Troy Redmann, his 18th goal of the season, to put Idaho on top. The Steelheads didn't wait long to play add-on. Just 30 seconds later, Jesse Root sprung Levi Nelson down the left-wing side. Showing extraordinary patience, Nelson got Redmann to commit to him before dropping a perfect pass to Wade MacLeod, crashing down the slot, for a tap-home goal at 6:34 to stretch Idaho's lead to 2-0, MacLeod's team-leading 37th goal of the season.
Roy, starting for the first time since January 31, made an important glove save on Ryan Walters at the right-wing post midway through the first to protect Idaho's lead into the second period.
The Steelheads again struck early in the second. First, at even strength, Alex Belzile centered a puck to rookie defenseman Zack Kamrass in the high slot. Kamrass ripped a shot through a screen past Redmann for his first professional goal at the 4:24 mark and he didn't wait long for his second pro goal. Four minutes later, on the power play, Colton Beck fed Kamrass again in a similar spot, the high slot, for a blast at 8:48 that ended Redmann's night as Niklas Lundstrom came on in relief.
From that point, Idaho played a controlled, strong defensive game, limiting Alaska's chances. The Steelheads did pick up a fifth goal at the 14:54 mark of the third period on a pretty, back-hand goal from Steve Quailer, his fifth of the season, to close out the scoring. Idaho killed off a pair of late Alaska power plays to help Roy pitch his fourth shutout of the season.
Roy earned his 23rd win of the season in net for Idaho with 20 saves. Redmann took the loss, allowing four goals on 15 shots before being replaced by Lundstrom, who stopped 10 of 11. Idaho's penalty kill was a perfect six-for-six and the power play unit converted one of four chances.
Kamrass (two goals), Nelson (two assists) and Beck (two assists) all had multi-point nights in the win for Idaho.
Idaho returns home this weekend to host a pair of games against the Colorado Eagles. The games, Friday and Saturday, will feature special jerseys to be auctioned off via silent auction, benefitting the Jayden DeLuca Foundation, courtesy of Muscle Pharm. Game time is 7:10 PM each night. Tickets are available online at www.idahosteelheads.com or by calling 208-331-8497.
