Stingrays Prevail 2-1 over Solar Bears in Marathon 15-Round Shootout

Orlando, FL - Defenseman Jake Suter scored the game-winning shootout goal in the 15th round and Jeff Jakaitis denied seven game-winning attempts to catapult the South Carolina Stingrays (43-19-1-6) over the Orlando Solar Bears (35-23-5-4) 2-1 at the Amway Center Thursday evening.

Forward Rob Ricci gave the Stingrays a 1-0 lead with 4:25 remaining in the first period completing a 3-on-2 rush with forward Rob Bellamy and defenseman Marcus Perrier beating Solar Bears goaltender Garret Sparks (SOL, 42 saves on 43 shots) under the blocker.

Solar Bears forward Brady Vail evened the contest and eventually forced the overtime and the shootout early in the third period slipping an wrist shot over the glove of Stingrays netminder Jeff Jakaitis (W, 29 saves on 30 shots) off the right-wing circle at 1:35.

In the breakaway contest, the two sides traded goals in the first two rounds with the Stingrays' Wayne Simpson and Andrew Rowe finding the back of the net. Forward Caleb Herbert gave the Stingrays the advantage in the fourth round, but the Solar Bears forced sudden death in the bottom of the fifth round. The two sides swapped tallies in the 11th and 13th rounds before Suter buried the game-winning goal for the Stingrays in the 15th frame. Jakaitis made 10 saves and denied seven game-winning attempts.

The Stingrays finished the contest 0-for-5 on the power play while the Solar Bears went 0-for-2.

The Stingrays take on the Orlando Solar Bears tomorrow, Friday, April 3 at 7:30 at the Amway Center and wrap up a season-long seven game road trip on Saturday, April 4 at 7:00 against the Florida Everblades at Germain Arena in Estero, Florida.

The Stingrays close the regular-season schedule on Saturday, April 11 against the Evansville IceMen at 7:05 at the North Charleston Coliseum on Fan Appreciation Night and The Post and Courier Hall of Fame Night.
