11.06.09 - Worcester 2 - Manchester 1 - Shootout - DCU Center

Danny Groulx scored in the 9th round of the shootout as the Sharks defeated the Monarchs 2-1 at the DCU Center on Friday night. Alex Stalock made 29 saves in goal and was 8-for-9 in the shootout for the Sharks 5th straight victory on home ice. Dwight Helminen scored his 2nd goal of the season to tie the game in the 2nd period. Jonathan Bernier made 45 saves in net for the Monarchs.

11.07.09 - Worcester 1 - Wilkes-Barre Scranton 2 - DCU Center

Steven Zalewski scored his 5th goal of the season, a power play goal, in a 2-1 loss to the Penguins on Saturday. Alex Stalock made 32 saves in the loss for the Sharks. Brandon Mashinter and John McCarthy each received major penalties for fighting in a chippy game. Worcester was outshot 34-31 to break a streak of nine straight games of outshooting opponents.

Sharks in the Atlantic

The Sharks are currently swimming in 2nd place with 17 points (8-4-0-1) in the Atlantic Division trailing Manchester (20 points). The Devils and the Falcons also have 17 points but have played two more games than Worcester. The Wolf Pack are in 5th place with 16 points, followed by the Sound Tigers in 6th place with 14 points. The Bruins (11 points) and the Pirates (10 points) round out the eight team division in a very choppy Atlantic Division. The Sharks have the 3rd best winning percentage in the Eastern Conference at.654%.

400 WINS!

*400 WINS!....With the victory vs. Springfield on November 1st, head coach Roy Sommer became just the 4th coach in AHL history to reach the 400 win plateau.

*Worcester Sharks Head Coach Roy Sommer, who plays a major role in developing players for the San Jose Sharks, is currently the longest-tenured coach (12th season) in the American Hockey League. His current regular season record after the win is now: 401-381-54-57.

*In Coach Sommer's first AHL victory.... The Kentucky Thoroughblades defeated the Albany River Rats 6-4 at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky on October 17th 1998. Coincidentally, Assistant Coach David Cunniff recorded an assist as a member of the River Rats in the hockey game.

*Assistant Coach David Cunniff has joined Coach Sommer in 244 of the 401 victories.

Shark Bites:

*Captains for the 2009-10 season: Captain Ryan Vesce (2nd year), Assistant Captains Derek Joslin (2nd year) and Mike Moore (1st year).... T.J. Trevelyan, Joe Callahan, and Steven Zalewski have also worn the "A" on their jerseys.

*From east to west..... The Sharks already have SEVEN players that heave seen action to both the AHL and NHL this season (McLaren, Zalewski, Vesce, Joslin, McGinn, Couture, and Callahan). The Sharks had 11 players accomplish that feat last season. Logan Couture and Ryan Vesce have each recorded their first NHL goals this season.

*You always remember your first..... Dennis McCauley (10/10), John McCarthy (10/9), Brandon Mashinter (10/9), Logan Couture (10/10), and Dean Strong (10/30) have all scored their first professional regular goals this season.

*OT Killers.... The Sharks are 2-0 in OT this season after going 7-1 last year in the overtime period.

*Stop those pucks!.... Alex Stalock made 61 saves in two games this weekend allowing just three goals for a.968 save%.

*Young Guns....The average age of the Sharks roster is 23 which includes 15 rookies, five 2nd year players and two third year players. At the age of 28, Danny Groulx is the oldest while Nicholas Petrecki at 20 years old and four months is the youngest.

*Take the college or juniors route....the Sharks have 17 players from the college ranks (nine from hockey east), nine from juniors and two players that played in both.

*Massachusetts... The Sharks have five players born and raised in Massachusetts (John McCarthy - Andover, Corey Quirk - Brockton, Dennis McCauley - Billerica, Joe Callahan - Brockton, and Benn Ferriero )

*Streakers... Logan Couture has a five game point streak (4-5-9).

*All four years....Defenseman Derek Joslin is the only Sharks player to suit up in all four seasons in Worcester.

*Can't score if you don't shoot.... The Sharks lead the AHL with 37.23 shots per game.

*Follow the leaders.... Danny Groulx is 2nd in the AHL with 12 assists.... Logan Couture leads the AHL with 3 game winning goals and is 9th in rookie scoring (4-6-10) in just seven games played....Brandon Mashinter is 3rd among AHL rookies with five fighting majors.... Alex Stalock is 3rd in the AHL with 6 wins and 8th in GAA at 1.84.

*Early risers.... The Sharks have scored first in nine of 13 games this season. Worcester is 7-1-0-1 when lighting the lamp first.

*Five for fighting...The Sharks have 15 fighting major penalties this season through 13 games... (Brandon Mashinter 5, Dennis McCauley 3, Frazer McLaren 3, Joe Loprieno 2, Nicholas Petrecki 1, and John McCarthy 1). The Sharks had 78 fighting majors last season, 68 fighting majors in 2007-08 and 54 in 2006-07.

*Sin Bin... John McCarthy received his first professional fighting major in the 2nd period vs. Keven Vellieux of the WBS Penguins on Saturday.

Sharks in the Pacific:

The San Jose Sharks are 12-4-2 with 26 points in the NHL this season and are currently in 1st place in the Pacific Division, four points ahead of the 2nd place Los Angeles Kings.

Jamie McGinn has two goals in 12 games....Ryan Vesce has a four game point streak (3-1-4) but has missed the last seven games due to injury.... Derek Joslin has six shots in four games.... Jason Demers has ten points (0-10-10) and is 2nd on the team with a +7 through 18 games. Brad Staubitz has two goals and 37 penalty minutes through 11 games. Former Worcester Shark Devin Setoguchi has nine points (7-2-9) through eleven games. Goaltender Thomas Greiss is 1-1-0 with a 1.38 GAA and a.957 save%.

Coming Up:

On Wednesday, The Sharks continue their four game home stand with an afternoon game vs. the Lowell Devils at 1:05p.m on Veterans Day. All veterans and current servicemen and women will receive a free ticket at the DCU Center Box Office on Wednesday with a Military and state ID. With every Wednesday game, Sharks fans that have lost their jobs will receive up to four tickets for their family with proof of unemployment and valid state ID. It's also Dollar Dog Wednesdays.... On Friday, The Sharks travel to Lowell for a 7p.m. tilt vs. the Lowell Devils.

On Saturday, the Sharks host the Hartford Wolf Pack at 7:05p.m. Tiffany Thornton from Sonny with a Chance will sign autographs in the concourse at the DCU Center from 5:30p.m. to 7:30p.m. Fans may purchase a family four pack which includes four tickets and two pictures of Tiffany Thornton, for just $15.00 per person (additional tickets are $15.00 each). All Sharks fans 16-years-old and younger are eligible for an autograph and are available at a first-come first served basis.
