Lake County Captains News Release
(FORT WAYNE, IN) - The Lake County Captains (29-26) provided power hitting and pitching, in a 4-0 win over the Fort Wayne TinCaps (22-34) their fifth shutout of the season on an overcast Saturday night at Parkview Field.
Doug Nikhazy took the ball for Lake County and twirled a gem. The 2021 second-round pick lasted a season-best 6.2 innings, striking out 10 TinCaps and allowing only one hit. The left-hander totaled 93 pitches, 62 finding the strike zone. Seven of the 10 K's were swings and misses.
Through the first five innings, the Captains were limited to just one hit an Alexfri Planez single to lead off the second. It all changed in the top of the sixth, after Angel Martinez and Raynel Delgado both had base knocks and Jhonkensy Noel walked to load the bases.
Alexfri Planez stepped up, the last time he was up with the bases juiced was Sunday, June 5th against West Michigan where he delivered a grand slam. Planez's did it again, hammering a ball over the Summit in straightaway center field, for his third long ball of the season, giving Lake County a 4-0 lead.
From there the bullpen went to work. Jordan Jones finished the seventh for Nikhazy and tossed a scoreless eighth. Trey Benton would be tested but kept Fort Wayne off the board in the ninth.
Following a single and two walks, the bases were loaded. Benton would force a 5-6-3 double play after ground out to the left side of the infield.
The sixth and final game of the road series here in Fort Wayne is tomorrow Sunday, June 12. First pitch is at 1:05 p.m.
Coverage of the game can be found on WJCU.org/Captains and the MiLB First Pitch app.
