Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

The New York Mets announced today they have purchased the contract of Binghamton Mets first baseman/outfielder Nick Evans and added him to their 25-man roster. Evans - who is starting in leftfield for the Mets today in Colorado and batting eighth - replaces Marlon Anderson, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain.

Evans was a key cog in the middle of Binghamton's lineup, pacing the club with eight homers and 31 RBIs to go along with a .292 average. The 22-year-old is tied for second in the Eastern League with five triples and his 21 extra-base hits put him in a tie for third. Evans has also been one of the B-Mets' most versatile players, seeing action at first base, leftfield and third base.

A righthanded hitter, Evans has spent his entire pro career in the Mets' organization since they drafted him in the fifth round in 2004 out of St. Mary's High School in Phoenix, Arizona. Evans is the first player to earn his first Major League call-up directly from Binghamton since pitchers Mike Pelfrey and Henry Owens were both summoned by the NY Mets on July 6th, 2006. First baseman Mike Jacobs is the last position player to earn his first Major League call-up from Binghamton. He joined the Mets on August 17th, 2005.

The Binghamton Mets continue their four-game homestand tonight, with their second straight game against the Reading Phillies. The first pitch from NYSEG Stadium is slated for 7:05 p.m.
