Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- The Defenders put on a hitting display as they smothered the visiting Senators by a final of 11-4.
Harrisburg jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Roger Bernadina who drove in Garrett Guzman on a slow chopper to the right hand side.
The Defenders didn't trail for long as Connecticut had a loud home half of the second. Carlos Sosa led off with a single, Adam Wiiter drew a walk and Dave Maroul flew out weakly to the second baseman. The red hot Jake Wald was next and he cranked a bases clearing triple to score two. Garrett Broshuis batted next and helped his own cause as he hit a groundball through a drawn-in infield to make it 3-1.
The Defs would add two more in the fourth inning on a single by Eddy Martinez-Esteve. His base hit plated Wald and Brad Boyer as Connecticut extended their lead to 5-1.
Another run came across in the fifth for the Defenders on an RBI double by Boyer to push the lead to 6-1.
Harrisburg got one back in the top of the sixth as Bernadina ripped a triple into the alleyway to bring home William Bergolla to shrink the lead to 6-2.
Connecticut's onslaught continued in the home half of the sixth as Witter slapped an RBI single to right to score Martinez-Esteve. Carlos Sosa tagged home plate as an error was committed in the field by Bergolla. Finally, Olmo Rosario delivered a run scoring single to bring Witter home as the Defs lead grew to 9-2.
Ian Desmond of the Senators singled home Andrew LeFave in the seventh as Harrisburg cut into the seemingly insurmountable lead, 9-3.
Harrisburg turned to a position player to take the mound in the bottom of the eighth inning as Marco Yepez toed the rubber for the Sens. Suffice it to say, it wasn't pretty. Yepez chucked knuckle balls toward Defender hitters but his command was suspect as he walked three and hit one batter as the Defs scored two more to make it 11-3.
The Senators scored a meaningless run in the home half of the ninth to make the game an 11-4 final.
Harrsiburg manager John Stearns was tossed in the middle of the eighth inning after a long drawn out altercation with first base umpire Ralph Menard.
The Defenders will take on the Senators Sunday afternoon at 1:05pm at Dodd Stadium. Tickets are available for the contest at ctdefenders.com or by calling the box office at (860) 887-7962.
