Newcomb Guides Travs Back to Win Column

Corpus Christi, TX - The Arkansas Travelers beat the Corpus Christi Hooks 4-2 on Wednesday night at Whataburger Field.

RHP Sean Newcomb (W, 2-0) tossed five innings and allowed a run on five hits with three walks and a Double-A-best eight strikeouts. Newcomb, who is 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA over his first four Double-A starts, has the only two Arkansas victories over the last 13 games.

RHP Eduard Santos faced the minimum six batters over two scoreless innings after Newcomb, RHP Danny Reynolds pitched a scoreless eighth and LHP Greg Mahle (S, 13) closed the game in the ninth. Mahle has 22 saves between Advanced-A and Double-A this year.

Hooks RF Leo Heras led off the game with a home run to right but Newcomb settled in from there. The Travs scored twice in the third to take the lead for good. C Anthony Bemboom reached on an error to start the third, and Arkansas utilized three straight singles from DH Raywilly Gomez, CF Chad Hinshaw (RBI) and 1B Brian Hernandez (RBI) to take a 2-1 lead.

Arkansas scored again in sixth on a Bemboom RBI single and once in the eighth after LF Ruben Sosa doubled and scored on a groundout.

Hinshaw finished 3-for-5 with the RBI and a stolen base and Sosa went 2-for-4 for a second consecutive night with two runs and a stolen base. In the series, Sosa is 4-for-8 with a home run, three RBIs, four runs scored, two stolen bases and a double.

Eight of the nine Travs starters reached base.

RHP Chris Devenski (L, 7-4) took the loss despite not surrendering any earned runs (two runs) over five innings in the start for Corpus Christi.

Arkansas finished 4-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

With the win, the Travs moved to within one game of first place in the north, tied with Tulsa one game behind the Springfield Cardinals.

Arkansas and Corpus Christi will play the finale on Thursday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
