Brinson's Clutch Night Sends Frisco to Win in 14th Inning

August 19, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
Frisco RoughRiders News Release

TULSA, OKLAHOMA (August 18, 2015) - Lewis Brinson came to the rescue. Twice. The outfielder snapped a tie game in the 13th inning and delivered the eventual game winning hit with a two-run single in the 14th to lift the Frisco RoughRiders over the Tulsa Drillers, 5-3, in the series opener at ONEOK Field.

After Brinson belted his 16th home run of 2015 in the 13th inning to give Frisco a 3-2 lead, the Drillers evened the game in their half of the frame. Lars Anderson hit a sac fly with the bases loaded to tie the game at three.

In the 14th inning, Luis Mendez, Luis Marte and Preston Beck each recorded a single to load the bases before Brinson, once again, came through to plate two runs and give the Riders a 5-3 lead. David Martinez (3-5), who blew the save opportunity in the 13th inning, worked a perfect 14th to secure the win.

Beck tied the game at two in the fifth inning when he belted a 3-1 pitch from Jharel Cotton to right center field. Cotton tossed six innings in relief for Tulsa and retired the final eight hitters he saw into the tenth inning.

The Riders squandered a chance to take the lead in the eighth inning. Beck led off with a hit to left and Ryan Cordell was deemed safe at first on a bunt single. Lewis Brinson laid down a successful sacrifice to move both runners up and after Alex Burg walked to load the bases, Drew Robinson popped out and Trever Adams struck out to end the threat.

Tulsa scored pair of two-out runs on four hits in the second inning. Lars Anderson doubled to begin the frame and later scored on a base hit from Erisbel Arruebarrena. After Yadir Drake singled to load the bases, Ronald Torreyes knocked in a second run with a single to center and the Drillers led 2-0.

Drillers starter Jose De Leon was nearly flawless over four innings. The right-hander worked around a leadoff walk to begin the game and later stranded two runners in the third. He struck out seven, and now leads all of Minor League baseball with 146. Frisco starter Phil Irwin was strong in his RoughRiders debut and received a no-decision. Irwin allowed seven hits, two runs, two walks and struck out five over six innings.

Jacob Rhame, the fifth pitcher used by Tulsa, served up the home run to Brinson in the 13th before Ramon Benjamin (1-2) allowed the runs to score in the 14th. Juan Grullon tossed three scoreless frames to extend the game into the 13th inning.

The RoughRiders (24-26, 53-67) have won three straight games. The two teams continue their series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. LHP Edwar Cabrera (4-1) opposes LHP Julio Urias (2-4). The Riders return to the Metroplex on Tuesday, August 25 to play a four-game set against San Antonio (San Diego Padres). Frisco has just seven home dates remaining in the 2015 regular season.
