Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - The Midland RockHounds bounced back to even the series with a 10-1 win against the Springfield Cardinals before 4,137 fans at Hammons Field on Wednesday night.
After the RockHounds (35-17, 70-52) took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, they added to the lead with a five-run rally in the top of the third against LHP Kyle Hald (L, 3-6). The RockHounds started the third with seven straight hits, including a pair of singles from CF Jaycob Brugman and 3B Ryon Healy. LF Josh Whitaker then drove an RBI double, followed by three straight RBI singles from SS Chad Pinder, 1B Anthony Aliotti and RF Matt Olson. With RHP Joey Donofrio taking over on the mound, DH Bruce Maxwell loaded the bases with a single. 2B Wade Kirkland then brought in the final run of the charge with an RBI sacrifice fly, before Donofrio ushered the Cardinals out of the frame with Midland up, 6-0.
Springfield (26-26, 56-66) started chipping away right away in the bottom of the third against RHP Chris Jensen (W, 8-9). With one away, DH Mike O'Neill reached safely on an infield single to the left side. One out later, SS Aledmys Diaz pulled an RBI double to left-center field, bringing in O'Neill all the way from first base to cut the Cardinals deficit to 6-1.
Midland, though, added three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Maxwell started the stanza with a double. 2B Wade Kirkland then followed with an RBI single, advancing to third when RF David Washington bobbled the ball in right field. After a groundout, Brugman worked a walk to put runners at the corners. Healy then bounced into an RBI fielder's choice that retired Brugman but brought in Maxwell from third. After Healy moved to second on a balk, he raced home on an RBI single from Whitaker to stretch the lead to 9-1.
Springfield RHP Chris Perry navigated through a scoreless sixth inning, but the RockHounds went back on the attack in the top of the seventh. Leading off the inning, Healy hit a solo shot to left field, stretching it to a 10-1 Midland lead.
Perry started the eighth with a pair of outs, before giving way to RHP Ronnie Shaban after a two-out walk. Shaban got the Cardinals out of the eighth, before tossing a scoreless ninth to wrap up his outing.
However, the RockHounds recieved a scoreless relief inning apiece from RHP Andres Avila, RHP Ryan Doolittle and RHP Seth Frankoff to close the 10-1 win for Midland.
