Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC â The Charlotte Checkers hockey club announced today that New York Rangers Assistant Coach Mike Pelino will arrive for the Checkers training camp on Wednesday.
Prior to being named as Rangers Assistant Coach on August 23, 2004, Pelino served with Hockey Canada, coaching at various levels of competition. He won 11 gold medals with Team Canada, including one at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, when he served as assistant coach. Most recently, Pelino was an assistant coach on Team Canada's gold medal team at the 2004 World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic, as well as the 2003 gold-medal squad in Finland. Last season, Pelino served as assistant coach to the Florida Panthers.
"It's absolutely great," said Checkers Head Coach Derek Wilkinson. "This unique opportunity is a first for our organization and it shows the dedication of the Rangers to the development of players and coaches alike." Wilkinson added "For me personally, it is invaluable to have a mentor with Mike's experience as we practice, evaluate players, and prepare for the season. You couldn't ask for anything better."
"I am proud to be involved in the development of some of the Rangers young talent in Charlotte," said Coach Pelino. "I am especially looking forward to spending time with both our prospects and Derek over the next several days. We share similar philosophies, enjoy good chemistry, and together I know we can develop a team that will make this city proud." Said Pelino, "Bottom line, it's great to be here."
