New York Boulders News Release
RAMAPO, New York - The Rockland Boulders were swept in a double-header against the New Jersey Jackals at Provident Bank Park Saturday evening in Can-Am League action.
Rockland was outscored 8-4 over the two contests, but managed to put together three more hits than New Jersey over the 14 innings of baseball.
It did not take many hits for the Jackals to outscore the Boulders in game one. On the back of ten walks and a pair of Boulder errors, New Jersey only needed 2 hits to drop the Boulders, 4-1, in the first of two games on Saturday.
New Jersey struck first in game one Saturday afternoon after quickly loading the bases in the first inning. Kris Sanchez hit into a fielder's choice with one out, allowing Mike DeJesus to score from third. On the play, Sanchez beat out the throw to first to avoid the double play, but Cristobal Santana threw out D'Angelo Jimenez at the plate to end the inning.
The Boulders quickly erased that run with one of their own. After Mike Richard grounded into a double play to empty the bases, Jeremy Slayden hit a solo shot over the right field short porch to tie the game.
The Jackals jumped on John Muller in the third after he allowed 8 different New Jersey batters to reach base in the inning, but only one by way of base hit. Muller walked five batters in the inning and the defense behind him committed two errors, allowing three runs to score and give the Jackals a 4-1 advantage.
The Boulders fell short of a comeback in game two Saturday night as they lost to the Jackals by a score of 4-3.
Down four runs, the Boulders knocked in three in the home half of the sixth to come within a run. In the seventh, they put two runners on without an out, but three straight strikeouts by Jackals' closer Jeff Gogal ended the Rockland threat and the ballgame.
The Jackals found themselves on the board first once again in game two after Chris Anderson hit a two-run blast into the left field grandstand in the top of the second.
Anderson added another RBI in the top of the fourth on a one-out double to center that plated Jordan Newton to increase the Jackals' lead to three runs.
Another run came around to score in the fifth for the Jackals. Myron Leslie slid in safely at the plate after Ryan Knippschild threw a wild pitch with two outs. This left New Jersey with a 4-0 lead after five.
The Boulders put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth to get themselves back in the game. Slayden started it off with a two-out single, followed by a Barry Wesson double off the left field wall to bring him around to score. Norm Hutchins then stroked a double of his own to score Wesson from second. Cristobal Santana followed with an RBI single to cut the score to 4-3.
The Boulders (13-18, 32-45) will play the final of their three-game series with the New Jersey Jackals at Yogi Berra Stadium on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
Jon Velasquez (6-5) will make his sixth road start of the season Sunday afternoon. He will take on New Jersey's Shaun Ellis (5-2).
