Zuercher's Complete Game, Monger's Homer Defeat Brockton 5-2

August 20, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Zach Zuercher dealt his third complete game of the season and Cameron Monger hit a two-run homer in Worcester's 5-2 victory over the Brockton Rox on Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium. The win clinched the second-half season series against the Rox for the Tornadoes, meaning they own the tiebreaker should the clubs finish tied for first.

Worcester scored three runs in the second inning. Ryan Crespi grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, scoring Nick Salotti from third (who doubled to lead the frame off). The next batter, Tony Patane, singled, and Monger followed with his fourth homerun of the season to left field.

The Rox first got on the board in the fifth with an RBI double from Jeremy Hunt. It was Hunt's first base hit as a member of the Brockton squad, and it scored Trey Hernandez from second. The run charged to Zuercher was unearned, since Hernandez took second on a passed ball.

In the top of the seventh, the Tornadoes added a couple of (unearned) runs. Monger led the inning off with a bunt single. Alex Nunez reached on a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error from starting pitcher Jake Loye. Abraham Nunez hit into a 3-5 fielder's choice, but Hunt's throw from third to get Nunez at first was wild, allowing both Nunezes to take an extra base. The next batter, Chris Colabello, hit a two-run double to score them both and finish Worcester's scoring for the night.

Melvin Falu added a two-out, two-strike solo homer in the ninth, but that was all the home team could muster against the Tornadoes' ace. Zuercher finished the game with nine strikeouts, including two in the ninth. His looking K of Chris Grossman on a payoff pitch ended the night. The lefty starter allowed six hits and didn't walk a batter. He's (3-1) in four starts against Brockton this season.

Loye went 6.1 innings in the loss, striking out four, walking none, and giving up five runs (three earned) on 11 hits. Brad Hertzler and Mark Rosen combined for 2.2 frames of scoreless relief, K'ing two and walking on (Salotti intentionally in the seventh).

Worcester will go for the sweep on Sunday evening at 5:05pm. Pre-game coverage starts on USTREAM at 4:50.
