August 20, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
New Jersey 4, Rockland 1 (Game 1 - 7 innings)
Jackals starting pitcher A.J. Wideman gave up a solo Jeremy Slayden homer and two more hits in the first inning against Rockland on Saturday. But in his final five frames, the 5-foot-10 lefty surrendered only two more hits, allowing his club to earn a 4-1 win over the Boulders in Game 1 of their doubleheader. Relieving Wideman in the seventh and final inning, New Jersey hurler Kyle Gunderson didn't allow a hit to earn his first save with New Jersey.
New Jersey 4, Rockland 3 (Game 2 - 7 innings)
The Boulders put the go-ahead run on base with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. That's when Jackals reliever Jeff Gogal stepped up. Gogal - who gave up a walk and a single to open the frame - struck out three straight Boulders batters to close out his team's 4-3 victory. The Jackals once held a 4-0 lead, with their first two runs coming on a second-inning Chris Anderson homer. Anderson later doubled in the team's third run, bringing his RBI total to three in his 2-for-3 effort. The Boulders put three on the board in the sixth thanks to four hits, including two doubles. But Gogal's big seventh inning on the mound halted the Rockland threat just in time.
Quebec 7, Pittsfield 2
In the first eight innings, starting Capitales pitcher Bryan Rembisz allowed just two hits and had shut out the visiting Colonials while his offense had piled on seven runs. And though Rembisz gave up a two-run Jerod Edmondson homer in the ninth, he still picked up a complete-game win and lowered his ERA to 2.91. At the plate for Quebec, 3B Ivan Naccarata went 3-for-4 and doubled in two runs in the sixth inning to give his team a 4-0 lead. Edmondson's homer in the ninth was his only hit of the game. In fact, no Colonials batter had more than one hit against Rembisz.
Worcester 5, Brockton 2
Tornadoes CF Cameron Monger went 2-for-4 and hit a two-run homer in the second inning to help his club beat the Brockton Rox, 5-2. The Tornadoes never trailed thanks to an impressive, complete-game effort from starting pitcher Zach Zuercher. Zuercher struck out nine Brockton batters and allowed two runs on six hits with no walks to bring his ERA to 3.62. Rox DH Melvin Falu hit a solo home run in the ninth inning, but Zuercher struck out the next batter - Rox C Chris Grossman - to finish off Brockton. Rox LF Shawn Williams was the only Brockton batter with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 in the contest.
Newark 12, New York 1
With his Bears club already leading, 7-1, headed into the eighth inning, Newark C Eric McGee cleared the bases with a grand slam home run to bring his team's lead to double digits. It was McGee's ninth home run of the year. Just two frames earlier, McGee's teammate, Danny Santiesteban hit a solo shot for his 11th jack of the season. The Newark pitching staff put in a team effort, with starter Anthony Pluta handing a shutout over to the bullpen after five innings. It was Pluta's first win of the year.
