New Jersey Jackals News Release

Pomona, N.Y. - After the Jackals took game one, 4-1, catcher Chris Anderson drove in three runs in a 4-3 nightcap victory as New Jersey swept the Rockland Boulders in a doubleheader on Saturday night at Provident Bank Park. The Jackals have won six of their last seven games and now sit just a half game behind the first-place Worcester Tornadoes in the second half standings with 14 games remaining in the regular season.

The Jackals were held to just two hits in game one, but New Jersey took advantage of erratic control from Boulders' starter John Muller to notch the 4-1 victory.

As Jon Muller (2-6) tied a Can-Am League record by walking nine batters, A.J. Wideman (5-2) cruised to his fifth consecutive win, allowing just one run - a Jeremy Slayden homer in the first inning - over six innings of work. Reliever Kyle Gunderson sealed the victory for the Jackals, retiring Rockland in order in the bottom of the seventh to notch his first save of the season.

The Jackals opened the scoring in the top of the first, loading the bases on a Mike DeJesus single and a pair of free passes before DeJesus scored on a fielders' choice.

After Slayden's 11th homer of the season tied it in the first, the Jackals broke the game open with three runs in the top of the third as they took advantage of two errors and four walks. After Chris White and Sean Smith led off with back-to-back walks, the Jackals executed a double steal and Rockland catcher Chad Duesler fired the ball into left field, allowing White to cross the plate and give New Jersey a 2-1 lead. Smith scored when Rockland shortstop Mike Richard dropped a routine pop up off the bat of Mike DeJesus before the Jackals capped the scoring on a Myron Leslie RBI double to right center.

Muller settled down from that point on as he combined with reliever Jon Shepard to hold the Jackals hitless after the third inning.

In the nightcap, Anderson knocked in three runs and Isaac Pavlik withstood a late Rockland rally to pick up his league-leading 12th win of the season as New Jersey emerged victorious, 4-3.

Anderson's eighth home run of the season, a two-run blast into the left field bleachers in the second inning following a Jordan Newton leadoff single, gave New Jersey a 2-0 lead. In the fourth, Newton picked up his second single of the game and scored when Anderson sliced a double into the gap in right center to make it 3-0.

The Jackals extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth inning when Leslie singled and worked his way around the bases. Aboard with one out, Leslie stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Chase Weems, and scored on a wild pitch.

The Boulders rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, stringing together four consecutive two-out hits against Pavlik to cut their deficit to one. After Slayden singled, Barry Wesson and Norm Hutchins stroked back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 4-2. The next batter, Cristobal Santana, lined a run-scoring single to center just out of the reach of a diving Sean Smith to pull the Boulders within one at 4-3. An error by DeJesus moved the tying run to second, but Pavlik escaped the jam by inducing an inning-ending pop up.

In the bottom of the seventh, pinch hitter Ryde Rodriguez drew a leadoff walk and Ray Stokes followed with a bunt single to put the tying and winning runs on base, but closer Jeff Gogal struck out the next three batters he faced to seal the victory and notch his 14th save in as many chances.

Pavlik (12-3) fanned seven Rockland batters over six innings, re-gaining the Can-Am League strikeout lead from Pittsfield's Miguel Flores as the veteran southpaw allowed three runs on six hits with two walks. Rockland starter Ryan Knippschild (1-4) took the loss after allowing four runs over five innings.

The Jackals and Boulders meet for the final time in the 2011 regular season on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. when the series shifts back to Yogi Berra Stadium. In the series finale, New Jersey will send right-hander Shaun Ellis (5-2, 4.11 ERA) to the mound against Rockland righty Jon Velasquez (6-5, 4.36 ERA). Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
