Portland Sea Dogs News Release
The Portland Sea Dogs magic number remains at one after a 1-0, 13-inning loss to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Saturday night at Hadlock Field. Portland can clinch a playoff spot with a victory on Sunday afternoon in game three of their four-game tilt. The Sea Dogs remain two games ahead of the Binghamton Mets for the second playoff spot - the B-Mets lost 5-4 on Saturday in Connecticut.
Ryan Patterson knocked in the game's lone run in the 13th inning with a two-out, RBI single to right field off Mike Bumatay. Dustin Majewski led off the inning with a single off Jon Searles (7-4) and advanced to second base on a sacrifice by Tony Miller. Keoni De Renne made a great play on a ground at third base to retire David Smith before Patterson's game-winner.
Brian Wolfe (1-3) worked two scoreless innings on two walks and one strikeout to earn the win for New Hampshire. Tracy Thorpe retired the Sea Dogs in order in the bottom of the 13th to earn his 18th save of the season.
The Sea Dogs stranded 14 runners, including two in three straight innings (9-11). New Hampshire had the only two hits with a runner-in-scoring position. Erik Kratz had a bunt-single in the 12th and Patterson's single in the 13th.
Kyle Jackson and Searles escaped huge jams in the late innings. New Hampshire loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth inning. Jackson induced a double play on Chip Cannon and fanned Patterson to end the inning.
In the 12th, Searles worked out of a second and third nobody out situation. The righthander fanned pinch-hitter Manny Mayorson for the first out. Tim Olson was cut down on a failed suicide-squeeze and Brad Hassey grounded out to second base.
Notes...New Hampshire has won three straight at Hadlock Field and wins the season series...Tommy Hottovy has retired 53 of 61 batters in his last three starts...Rusty Tucker worked two scoreless innings, fanning two.
