Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Pitcher R.D. Speihs picked up a go-ahead, pinch-hit RBI single for the Connecticut Defenders, helping them to a 5-4 win over the Binghamton Mets at Dodd Stadium Saturday. The loss, Binghamton's 19th in their last 28 games, evens the series at a game apiece.
Connecticut (63-76) went ahead in the first when Dan Ortmeier drew a leadoff walk, moved to third on a pair of groundouts and scored on a passed ball. Nate Schierholtz put the Defenders ahead 2-0 when he singled home Jake Wald in the second.
Binghamton (69-69) didn't get to Connecticut Garrett Broshuis until the sixth, when Corey Ragsdale bunted for a hit before pinch-hitter Andy Wilson walked. After Wilson Batista reached on a fielder's choice that forced out Ragsdale at third, Chase Lambin smacked a game-tying double to right-center off Broshuis (7-10), scoring Wilson and Batista. Lambin then came home on Jorge Padilla's sacrifice fly for a 3-2 B-Mets lead.
After Mike Nickeas hit a sac fly in the seventh to score Carlos Gomez for a 4-2 Binghamton lead, Connecticut rallied for three in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Eddie Camacho. Brian Horwitz walked to begin the frame before Camacho (3-4) struck out the next two hitters. However, Todd Jennings reached on an infield hit and Jake Wald hit a game-tying double to score Horwitz and Jennings. Up came Speihs, normally a relief pitcher, who lined a single to right off Matt Lindstrom, bringing home Wald with what proved to be the winning run.
Connecticut's Osiris Matos pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.
Sunday, the B-Mets play the third game of their season-ending four-game series at Connecticut. Kevin Mulvey (0-0, 2.45) gets the start for Binghamton against southpaw Geno Espineli (7-7, 4.40) of Connecticut. Game time is 2:05 from Dodd Stadium with the radio broadcast starting at 1:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
