The Latest The Binghamton Mets never trailed after a six-run second, beating the Connecticut Defenders 11-5 in the series opener at Dodd Stadium yesterday...Jorge Padilla went 4 for 5 with a double for Binghamton, driving in a run and scoring another, as both Ambiorix Concepcion and Wilson Batista had three-hit games. Concepcion, tripled, scored thrice and drove in a run while Batista had a two-run double and scored a run...relievers Ryan Cullen, Lino Urdaneta and Eddie Camacho combined for four innings of scoreless relief, yielding two hits...the win is Binghamton's fifth in their last seven games.

About Binghamton Yesterday, Portland lost to New Hampshire, putting Binghamton 2 games behind the Sea Dogs for the EL North's final playoff spot with 3 to play...After hitting an EL-best .291 and posting a 2.83 ERA during a 22-5 July, the B-Mets hit .231 while compiling a 4.41 ERA during a 11-19 August ...RHP Henry Owens is on the USA squad and RHP Ivan Maldonado and LHP William Collazo are playing for Puerto Rico in the COPABE Olympic Qualifying Tournament 8/25-9/5 in Havana, Cuba. The top two finishers in the 12-team field of North and South American nations qualify for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. The trio is expected to miss the rest of the regular season.

About Connecticut The Defenders were swept by New Hampshire in four games and have lost five in a row and 13 of 18...Connecticut's .233 batting average and 452 runs scored are both EL lows, but their 3.71 ERA is the league's fourth-best...the Defenders' pitchers are coached by Bob Stanley, Binghamton's pitching coach in 1999 and from 2001-2002.

This ‘N That Yesterday, starter Miguel Piñango picked up his 10th win of the season, making him the first B-Met pitcher to reach double figures in wins since Phil Seibel won 10 in 2002...over the last three games, Binghamton's bullpen has allowed a run in 11 IP (0.82 ERA)...after beginning the year 23-35, the B-Mets won 37 of 52 from 6/7-8/5, moving 10 games above .500. Since then, the BMets have dropped 18 of 27...Barring anymore cancellations, Portland and Binghamton are both scheduled to play 140 games, each losing two contests to rain. If the B-Mets and Portland are tied for second at the end of the regular season, a one-game tiebreaker would be played Tuesday and hosted by Portland, since they won the season series...Thursday, the B-Mets drew a club-record 7,119 to NYSEG Stadium for the final home game of 2006, shattering the previous mark of 6,953 accomplished 7/15/2002 vs. ALT...Thursday, the B-Mets were shut out for the 14th time this season, a club record. The B-Mets were blanked 13 times in 2002.
