The Portland Sea Dogs quest at their fifth playoff spot in franchise fell short, dropping the series opener to the Fisher Cats, 8-7 on Friday night at Hadlock Field.

In the ninth inning, Jeremy West smacked a double down the left field line but Luis Jimenez was thrown out at the plate to end the game.

Camden, Maine native Mike MacDonald (13-9) earned his second win this season against Portland. The righthander worked six and 2/3 innings on eight hits, seven runs (six earned)on three walks and five walks.

Jose Vaquedano (9-8) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs in four and 1/3 innings.

Tracy Thorpe pitched the ninth inning to earn his 17th save of the season.

Alberto Concepcion and Brian Myrow each had 2 RBI for Portland. Ryan Patterson had three hits for the Fisher Cats, including a two-run homer.

Myrow and Jeremy West gave Portland a 2-0 lead in the second inning with RBI's. Trailing 8-4 in the seventh inning, Portland scored 3 two-out runs.

Notes...New Hampshire leads the season series 13-11...Luis Jimenez reached base four times...The top 3 hitters went 1-for-13 on the night.
