Lancaster Stormers News Release
The record books had to be rewritten after a 16-inning game at Clipper Magazine Stadium earlier this week. On Saturday night, the record books had to be opened again.
Bryant Nelson hit three home runs, the first Barnstormer to do that in a single game, and Lancaster downed the Camden Riversharks 7-6 to end a four game skid. The win, paired with Somerset's loss, reduced the Patriots' lead in the Freedom Division over Lancaster to four games.
The Barnstormers struck in the first inning. Aaron Herr picked up his 90th RBI of the season, becoming just the second Barnstormer to hit that mark, on a groundout that scored Michael Woods.
Nelson hit his first home run out to right field in the third, a solo shot that put the Barnstormers up 2-0. This was the third consecutive night that Nelson hit a home run.
Starter Jose Sanchez pitched four shutout innings, but ran into trouble in the 5th. Richie Robnett led off the inning with a single, and then Brian Burgamy reached base on an error. Chris Malec followed with a 3-run home run on a 3-0 count to give the Riversharks the lead.
Nelson led off the bottom of the 5th inning and once again hit a solo home run to right off of Riversharks starter Josh Brey to tie the game at three. Sanchez retired the first two batters of the 6th before giving up a triple to Chris Walker and a walk to Robnett. Sean Thompson came in the game. He walked the first batter he faced and then gave up a 2-run single to Malec, who finished with 5 RBIs on the night.
Josh Brey pitched through the 6th inning before giving way to Gabe Medina, who made his Riversharks debut for the 2010 season in the 7th. Lloyd Turner led off the inning with a single. After Michael Woods flew out to right, Bryant Nelson came up again, batting as a lefty for the first time in the game. Nelson went to a 2-2 count before launching a pitch down the right field line. The ball hooked inside the foul pole, and Nelson became the first Barnstormer to hit three home runs in a game. He also became the first Barnstormer to hit home runs from both sides of the plate in the same game.
The Barnstormers weren't done yet. After Nelson tied the game, Aaron Herr hit an infield single between short and third. Reggie Taylor grounded out, but Herr would advance to second on the play. Ryan Mulhern singled Herr home to give the Barnstormers the lead, 6-5. Mulhern stole second while Octavio Martinez was at the plate, and then Martinez added another RBI, singling home Mulhern.
Thompson started the 8th, but walked two of the first three batters he faced, so Tim McNab was brought into the game. McNab allowed one run to score, but then worked the last 1.2 innings without giving up another run to pick up the save, his eighth. Thompson (4-7) got the win while Medina (0-1) got the loss.
The Barnstormers finish their homestand Sunday evening against Camden. Ross Peeples (3-0) will make another start for the Barnstormers, while the Riversharks will send Mike Madsen (2-2) to the mound.
