Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

The Blue Crabs came from behind to edge the Somerset Patriots 3-2 Saturday evening before a crowd of 4,729 at Regency Furniture Stadium. The victory prevented the Crabs from losing three in a row at home for just the third time this year. Shortstop Travis Garcia drove in the winning run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth inning. In his Blue Crab debut, second baseman David Espinosa scored on the hit by pitch after doubling to begin the inning. Somerset stranded two runners in the first, but took a 1-0 in the second. Leftfielder Elliott Ayala hit a one out infield single and advanced to third on shortstop Iggy Suarez's double. With runners in scoring position, rightfielder Joe Holden bounced an RBI grounder to second. Although Espinosa retired Holden for the second out, Ayala scored easily. RHP Joe Newby (6-5) kept the Patriots scoreless through the next four innings, and retired them 1-2-3 in the fifth. Newby struck out four in six innings of work for the no decision. The Blue Crabs offense took Newby off the hook in the fifth, as Garcia scored on an RBI double by catcher Christian Lopez that went over centerfielder Wayne Lydon's head and all the way to the wall. Garcia began the inning with a base hit. Patriots RHP Josh Miller (12-8) struck out six in as many innings pitched, but had to settle for a no decision. Southern Maryland went ahead for the first time in the series in the seventh. Centerfielder Richard Giannotti laced an RBI single down the rightfield line, scoring rightfielder Ben Harrison. The Patriots tied the game again in the eighth on Matt Hagen's leadoff home run. It was his eighth of the season. RHP Jeff Kennard (3-2) came in to pitch the eighth for Somerset, but failed to preserve the tie by loading the bases and subsequently hitting Garcia with a 2-2 offering. Kennard suffered the loss, while RHP Ryan Speier earned his second win and fellow righty Jim Ed Warden recorded his 27th save. The Blue Crabs return to action Sunday afternoon for the finale of this four-game series against the Somerset Patriots at Regency Furniture Stadium. RHP Jason Monti (4-6, 3.94) will start for Somerset, opposite LHP Brandon Mann (0-0, 6.30) for Southern Maryland. First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m.
