Blue Crabs Halt Patriots Streak

Somerset Patriots News Release
Waldorf, MD- In a tight game from start to finish, the Blue Crabs scored twice against the Somerset bullpen and Jim Ed Warden locked down his league leading 27th save as Southern Maryland snapped the Patriots six-game win streak with a 3-2 victory on Saturday night at Regency Furniture Stadium.
A see-saw affair saw both starters throw quality outings as Josh Miller and Joe Newby each went 6.0 innings allowing single runs. Joe Holden grounded out in the 2nd allowing Elliott Ayala to come in and score after he had been doubled to third by Iggy Suarez. That would be the only tally against Newby who yielded just six hits, battling through 115 pitches. Miller allowed just two baserunners in the first four frames before Travis Garcia singled and was doubled home by Christian Lopez to tie the game in the 5th. Miller struck out six, surrendering just four hits on his night as both starters received no-decisions.
Southern Maryland took the lead in the 7th against Ben Grezlovski with a two-out walk to Ben Harrison and after a steal and a pass ball, Richard Giannotti was able to serve a ball to right field, bringing Harrison in for a 2-1 advantage. But Matt Hagen quickly answered back in the 8th, sending a deep fly ball to left center field off Ryan Speier. Shaun Cumberland climbed the wall, hoping to flag it down but reached out to no avail as Hagen left the yard, tying the game at 2-2.
However, the Blue Crabs got to Jeff Kennard in the 8th inning as David Espinosa, in his Southern Maryland debut, doubled to start the frame. Casey Benjamin sacrificed him to third and Matt Craig took an intentional walk to set up the double play with Eric Crozier at the plate. The former Major Leaguer drew a walk, loading the bases and Travis Garcia, on a 2-2 pitch, was grazed in the jersey with a fastball, bringing home the go-ahead run. Warden came in for the 9th, retired the first two men before Joe Burke worked a nine-pitch single, putting the tying run on base. But Warden struck out Jeff Nettles to end the threat and give Southern Maryland the victory.
Somerset (32-24, 68-59) and Southern Maryland (33-21, 74-50) finish off the season series Sunday afternoon as Jason Monti (4-6, 3.94)gets the call against left-hander Brandon Mann (0-0, 6.30) at 2:00 pm on 1450 WCTC-AM and online at www.wctcam.com and www.somersetpatriots.com.
