Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats (21-38) won for the first time in their last five games, defeating the Tennessee Smokies (31-28) 7-6 Tuesday night at Five County Stadium thanks to a pair of two-run homers by Kris Negron.
Carolina starter Camilo Vazquez (W, 5-4) was perfect into the fourth inning before allowing three earned runs in the sixth frame. Vazquez entrusted two base runners to reliever Ruben Medina who fanned Tony Thomas to end the sixth. Medina (H, 3) and Joe Krebs (H, 2) bridged the gap to closer Philippe Valiquette (S, 3) who earned a ninth inning save.
Jim Adduci and Wellington Castillo each had three base knocks as a part of the Smokies 11 hit performance. Four different Tennessee hitters drove in a run.
Carolina also finished with 11 hits, with three Mudcats knocking multiple safeties. Kris Negron popped two dingers for the Mudcats, a two-run shot in the second and another two-run homer in the seventh. Negron finished 3-4 while scoring three runs and driving in four.
The series finale at Five County Stadium is scheduled for Wednesday night at 7:15 PM. Lefty Alexander Smit (3-3, 4.06) will head to the hill for Carolina against Casey Coleman (13-6, 3.83) of Tennessee.
