
Bray, Jaxx earn series victory over Barons

JACKSON, TENN. (AUGUST 25, 2009) - Steve Bray (7-6) worked seven innings for his third straight start and helped the Diamond Jaxx to a 6-4 victory of the Barons (36-23). Bray wins his fifth start in six tries and has gone at least six innings in all of them. Bray dealt seven innings, yielding just one run on five hits and striking out five Barons on Tuesday night. The Jaxx now lead the division by a full game over Tennessee and Chattanooga. Offensively, the Jaxx were led by Rich Poythress, who drove in three runs with a double and finished 1-for-2, reaching base three times. Johan Limonta added his fourth three-hit effort this season and Travis Garcia finished 2-for-4 for the Diamond Jaxx. With the win, the Jaxx take the series against the Barons and there 10th series triumph this year. The win also evens the season series with Barons at 7-7, with the season rubber game coming on Wednesday.
Steve Bray had not allowed a run in his previous 17 innings, and in the top of the second, the Barons ended that streak. Bray gave up a two out double to Jim Gallagher to left, and walked John Shelby. The next batter, Adam Ricks blooped a single to left scoring Gallagher from second. The Barons jumped out to a 1-0 lead.
The Jaxx took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Rich Poythress cleared the bases with a double. Poythress plugged the left-center gap scoring Marshall Hubbard, Matt Mangini and Callix Crabbe. Poythress was thrown out at third on the double, attempting to stretch it to a triple. Rich has eight RBI in his first 15 Double-A games.
The Jaxx pushed across three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday night, off of the bullpen for Birmingham. Henry Mabee walked Marshall Hubbard, bringing in a run and then Johan Limonta plated Flemming Baez and Greg Halman with a single, opening the game up at 6-1 after seven innings.
Birmingham pulled a little closer to the Jaxx in the top of the eighth inning. Kyle Parker, appearing for the second time out of the bullpen this year, surrendered two runs, as eight Barons came to the plate. The Barons cut the Jaxx lead to 6-3.
Jordan Danks delivered his first hit of the game off of Jaxx reliever Brodie Downs in the ninth inning, plating Rob Hudson from second. But, with two outs the Jaxx turned to Anthony Varvaro (S, 8) and he got C.J. Retherford to pop out to catcher Flemming Baez to end the game. Varvaro appeared for the second consecutive day, earning the win on Monday night. The Jaxx took the series with a 6-4 win on Tuesday.
Taking the hill on Wednesday afternoon at 12:05 today will be LHP Nick Hill (5-5, 2.66). Nick has thrown three consecutive complete games and looks to make history with his eighth start of the year. Taking the mound for the Barons will be RHP Kyle McCulloch (8-9, 4.59). The Jaxx wrap up the season series with the Birmingham Barons on Wednesday and the Barons were the first half Champions in the South Division.
