Mobile, Ala. - Brad Stone allowed one hit over six scoreless innings while four different hitters knocked in runs to lead the Jacksonville Suns (75-54, 40-19) to a 4-1 victory over the Mobile BayBears (61-68, 24-35) in front of 2,511 Tuesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
The win combined with Mississippi's loss to Chattanooga secured Jacksonville's Southern League-best 17th playoff appearance, as Jacksonville and Birmingham are the only teams left in the second half division race. The Suns have already secured the next-best overall record in the division if Birmingham is to win the second half division title.
Stone (6-3) picked up the victory, dealing six scoreless innings with one hit, four walks and three strikeouts while ending a personal string of back-to-back losses. Matt Torra (8-13) fell in the loss, giving up three runs and eight hits over seven innings, his first loss in four appearances against Jacksonville. Matt Peterson (32) saved the game, recording the final out with a third-to-first pickoff move in the ninth inning.
Jacksonville opened the scoring in the fourth inning when Scott Cousins doubled home Mike Stanton for a 1-0 score. The Suns later added two different two-out runs in the fifth inning on back-to-back RBI doubles from Chris de la Cruz and Logan Morrison for a 3-0 score.
Mobile added a run in the seventh inning against Suns reliever Chris Leroux on an Evan Frey infield hit for a 3-1 Suns lead.
Jacksonville added an insurance run in the eighth inning as Matt Dominguez singled home Logan Morrison with two out for a 4-1 final.
