WILMINGTON, DE (JUNE 18, 2011) - Rey Navarro hit two home runs and Justin Marks struck out a career-high 12 batters as the Blue Rocks had their way with the Dash, winning 7-2 on Saturday night at Frawley Stadium. The loss was Winston-Salem's eighth in the last 11 games and dropped the team to a season-high-tying seven games below .500.
Wilmington (36-32) got to Winston starter Andre Rienzo for two runs in the first inning. Navarro hit a long solo home run out to right to get the Rocks on the board, sparking a two-out rally. The next three batters singled, the last of which brought home Nick Francis to make it 2-0 Wilmington.
The Dash (31-38) notched a run on Jake Oester's sac fly in the top of the second to halve the deficit.
Rienzo (1-3) was removed from the game after two mostly ineffective innings. Leroy Hunt entered in the third and allowed back-to-back doubles to Francis and John Whittleman, the second producing a run to get Wilmington's lead back to two.
Navarro went deep for the second time in the fourth inning, a two-run shot off Hunt to make it 5-1. Winston-Salem scored again in the fifth inning off Marks (3-5) when Luis Sierra brought Nick Ciolli home from third on a double play.
The Blue Rocks added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings to account for the final margin.
Winston had its best chance to rally in the eighth inning against reliever Edgar Garcia. Trailing 6-2, Daniel Wagner and Jose Martinez singled to start the inning. With runners on the corners, Jared Mitchell walked on a 3-2 pitch. Martinez was running on the pitch and mistakenly that thought Mitchell had fouled it off. After touching second base, he started to walk back to first base. Garcia threw the ball to Navarro, who placed the tag on Martinez, who was ruled out because he left second while the ball was still live. Instead of having the bases loaded with no outs, Winston had runners at the corners with one out. Garcia proceeded to strike out Ian Gac and retire Andy Wilkins on a fly ball to end the inning and the threat.
Marks earned his second win in as many starts against the Dash this season, striking out a career-high 12 batters in the process. Winston-Salem struck out 17 times over the course of the evening, a new season-high. Rienzo suffered his second straight loss after giving up two runs on five hits with two walks in two innings.
The first half of the season concludes on Sunday afternoon at 1:35. RHP Ryan Buch (1-3, 5.34), who hails from nearby Yardley, Pennsylvania, gets the nod for Winston-Salem against RHP Elisaul Pimentel (4-3, 4.21). The audio broadcast of the game begins at 1:15 on www.wsdash.com.
