Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - After clinching the Carolina League's Southern Division first-half title the night before, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans didn't have much to play for on Saturday. But they rallied back from 5-4 down in the eighth to score four runs as they took down the Frederick Keys for the third straight night in an 8-5 victory at BB&T Coastal Field for their 40th win of the season.
Myrtle Beach led the whole way, but Jacob Julius's two-run home run in the top of the eighth off Trevor Hurley (1-3) put the Keys ahead 5-4. With one out in the bottom half of the inning, Leury Garcia singled off Frederick closer Sean Gleason (1-3) and when center fielder Miguel Abreu bobbled the ball, Andres James scampered home from second with the tying run.
Garcia, who had three hits for the third straight game, went to second on the play and stole third before Jared Prince knocked a single to bring him home with the go-ahead run. Prince came around to score on a Jonathan Schoop throwing error, the third Frederick misplay of the inning before Mitch Hilligoss singled home another run in the four-run frame.
Ryan Kelly capped a 1-2-3 ninth with a strikeout of Tyler Kolodny to record his ninth save and give Myrtle Beach the win. The Pelicans improved their first-half mark to 40-29 and with a win tomorrow they will complete a four-game sweep of the Keys and will tie Frederick for the best overall record in the league.
For the third straight game, the Pelicans put up a first-inning run on the Keys. Chris McGuiness doubled home Ryan Strausborger, who extended his league-high on-base streak to 30 games with a single. They added on in the second off Frederick starter Ryohei Tanaka. Hilligoss doubled and Jared Hoying followed with double of his own to put Myrtle Beach 2-0. Hoying, who picked up a hit in each of his first three plate appearances, scored on a Garcia single.
Kennil Gomez got the ball in a spot start for the Pelicans and allowed two runs in four innings, with the only blemish against him being a Dale Mollenhauer home run in the fourth. Chad Bell followed with two and two-thirds innings of one-run ball and was in line for the win before the Julius long ball.
The first-half finale is set for Sunday night as the Pelicans go for the four-game sweep. Justin Grimm starts the Pelicans and Barret Loux will piggy-back on that start out of the bullpen. Righty Oliver Drake will go for Frederick with first pitch at BB&T Coastal Field scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
