Wilmington Duo Leads To Lopsided Win

Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - Justin Marks was overpowering on the mound and Rey Navarro put on a power display at the plate. The duo's dynamic performance helped lead the Wilmington Blue Rocks to a 7-2 victory over the Winston-Salem Dash on Saturday night at Frawley Stadium in the penultimate game of the 2011 season's first half.
Marks (3-5) established a new career-high by registering 12 strikeouts in his 6.1 frames of work. The southpaw set the tone early, fanning the side in the first and recording five of the contest's first six outs on strikes. He retired the side in order three times and at one point set down eight straight batters. He left with only two runs, five hits and two free passes on his line.
Marks' departure came with Wilmington on top by three runs thanks in large part to Navarro, who finished the night 3-for-5 with two homers, a double and three runs scored.
The third baseman jumpstarted a two-out rally in the opening frame when he launched a solo dinger that snuck just inside the right-field foul pole. Nick Francis, John Whittleman and Yem Prades followed with successive singles to make it, 2-0 Blue Crew.
Wilmington added another run in the third when Francis and Whittleman opened the frame with back-to-back doubles. Navarro brought two more scores across an inning later when he laced a two-run bomb over the right-centerfield fence. The Rocks increased their advantage to 6-2 in the sixth when a Francis double set up an RBI single off the bat of Prades.
Winston-Salem attempted to rally off the Wilmington bullpen in the eighth. Edgar Garcia allowed the first two batters of the inning to reach on singles and appeared to bring the potential tying-run to the plate when he walked Jared Mitchell. But Jose Martinez thought the fourth ball was actually a foul ball. He retreated back to first after touching second base and was tagged out. The enormous mental miscue deflated the Dash, and Garcia retired the final two batters of the frame with ease.
Navarro added one last run to the Wilmington ledger in the home-eighth. He doubled and then came around to score on a sacrifice fly Whittleman.
Wilmington and Winston-Salem will wrap up the series and the first half on Sunday at Frawley Stadium, with first pitch slated for 1:35 p.m. Right-hander Elisaul Pimentel (4-3, 4.21) gets the ball for the Rocks against Dash righty Ryan Bauch (1-3, 5.34). Broadcast coverage begins at 1:05 p.m. when studio host Adam Dobrowolski brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.
