Woodbridge, VA - On the penultimate day of the first half, Salem split a doubleheader with Potomac on Saturday night at Pfitzner Stadium, garnering a 5-2 victory in the opener before getting blanked two-zip in the nightcap. Bryce Brentz went 3-4 with a homer and four RBI in game one, while Anthony Ranaudo became the tough-luck loser in game two. Ranaudo fell to 1-3 in four Carolina League starts, with Salem supporting him with just two total runs in the three losses, the last two of which have been 2-0 shutouts.

Brentz blasted a three-run bomb in the first inning of the day, vaulting the Sox to a 3-0 edge that would not be relinquished in the opener. The Nationals scored twice to creep within a run, but Salem responded a pair of insurance tallies in the top of the seventh to prevail 5-2. The top third of Salem's lineup, Shannon Wilkerson, Kolbrin Vitek, and Bryce Brentz, scored all five runs, combining for six hits in 12 at-bats. Brentz also contributed an RBI double in addition to his first-inning jack, his third Carolina League homer and 14th overall.

Jeremiah Bayer earned the win for Salem, tossing an inning and two-thirds of scoreless baseball in relief of Ryan Pressly. The Salem starter allowed two runs on six hits and four walks over four and third innings, escaping with a no-decision. The Nationals had runners on base in every inning in the opener, stranding 13 on base in the seven-inning game. Michael Gleason came on with two runners aboard and nobody out in the seventh, recording the final three outs without allowing a run to earn his second Carolina League save.

In the nightcap, Paul Demny set down the first 11 men he faced and allowed just one hit in five innings, picking up the win to improve to 4-6. Salem broke up the no-hitter with Michael Almanzar's double in the fifth, but no more hits were forthcoming the rest of the night. The Sox received three walks, but none of the free passes translated into runs as Salem was blanked for the fifth time in 2011. Three of the shutouts have occurred in the last nine games, twice with Ranaudo on the mound.

Ranaudo dealt five, allowing five singles and two runs, with four strikeouts and two walks. Fourty-eight of his 73 pitches were strikes, but both of Ranaudo's walks came in the last of the second inning, when two singles and two walks combined to plate a pair. Nationals center-fielder Eury Perez came through with a bases loaded single to center, scoring the only two tallies of the game.

The Red Sox and Nationals will wrap up the first half of 2011 on Sunday with a 1:05 matinee at Pfitzner Stadium. All-Star lefthander Chris Hernandez gets the start for Salem, while Potomac will counter with Cameron Selik.
