Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springdale, AR - LF Hunter Dozier connected for a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth, propelling the Northwest Arkansas Naturals to the 3-2 come-from-behind win against the Springfield Cardinals before 3,743 fans at Arvest Ballpark on Thursday night. The 1st-place Cardinals go for the series win in the finale on Friday at 7:15pm.
CF Harrison Bader extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single on Thursday. He is hitting .528 (19-for-36) during the streak.
Both starting pitchers - Cardinals RHP Mike Mayers and Naturals RHP Alec Mills - dueled back and forth through five scoreless innings to start. Mayers ended up with only one unearned run through his seven innings, while Mills allowed just two runs through his seven stanzas.
Springfield (15-12) broke through against Mills with a two-out rally in the top of the sixth. Bader extended the stanza initially with a two-out single, before stealing his way to second base. After Bader took third on a wild pitch, LF C.J. McElroy, Jr. lined an RBI single to center field, collecting his fourth RBI in the last two games to lift the Cardinals into the 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals doubled the advantage in the top of the seventh. With one away, DH Luke Voit worked a walk to reach base. 3B Paul DeJong then drilled an RBI double to right-center field, bringing in Voit all the way from first base to make it 2-0.
After six scoreless innings, the Naturals (12-14) got on the board against Mayers with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh. A double from 3B Mauricio Ramos with one away snapped Mayers' streak of eight straight outs and got a man on in the seventh. Ramos tagged and took third on a fly out from DH Frank Schwindel, putting a runner ninety feet away from scoring with two outs. Mayers induced a ground ball to third base from C Cameron Gallagher that DeJong fielded and fired to first. However, 1B Chris Jacobs couldn't quite make the catch cleanly, enabling Gallagher to reach and Ramos to score, cutting the Cardinals lead to 2-1.
Northwest Arkansas swung in front in the bottom of the eighth. Facing LHP Corey Littrell, RF Orlando Calixte led off with a single. After inducing a fly out to center field, Littrell gave way to RHP Kurt Heyer (L, 0-2) with one on and one down. However, LF Hunter Dozier won the battle against Heyer with a go-ahead, two-run home run to left field, catapulting the Naturals into the 3-2 lead.
The Cardinals refused to go down without a fight against RHP Kevin McCarthy (W, 2-0) in the top of the ninth. With one down, 2B Bruce Caldwell and Voit ripped back-to-back base hits, getting the potential tying run as far as second base. However, McCarthy dug in with a strikeout and a groundout, and the Naturals hung on for the 3-2 win.
