Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
MIDLAND - Raul Alcantara of the Midland RockHounds received a ton of run support while tossing six no-hit innings to down the Corpus Christi Hooks 13-0 on Thursday night in front of 4,684 at Security Bank Ballpark.
The Hounds improved to 17-10 on the season and have won six of the first seven matchups this year against the Hooks.
On the other side, Corpus Christi (12-14) has now won just four of its last fifteen games.
Midland's starter was on his game from start to finish. Alcantara (2-1) earned the victory while using 88 pitches (58 for strikes), striking out four, and allowing just two baserunners. Chase McDonald walked in the second inning and Derek Fisher reached on an error by Yairo Munoz in the fourth but that was all the Hooks could muster.
The RockHounds took a no-hitter into the eighth inning. Jack Mayfield finally broke through with a single off of Midland reliever Ben Bracewell to stop that bid. Alex Bregman accounted for the only other Hooks' hit in the ninth when he doubled off of Bracewell.
The RockHounds' reliever went the final three innings, surrendering those two hits, and striking out one to earn his first save of the season.
It was a rough night for two Hooks pitchers. Cy Sneed (1-1) got the start and took the loss going three plus innings, yielding eight hits, seven runs (all earned), walking three, and striking out four. David Schmidt entered in the fourth and couldn't stop the bleeding. In his one inning of work, the RockHounds scored five runs (three earned) on four hits, drew two walks, and capitalized on two Corpus Christi errors.
Of the eighteen RockHounds hits, ten of them were from the two through five hitters in the lineup. Jaycob Brugman had a triple and a single in four at-bats with one RBI and three runs scored. Ryon Healy (one of the hottest hitters in the league to start the season) added two hits and two RBI's. Matt Chapman recorded three straight run-scoring singles to start his evening in the cleanup spot. Viosergy Rosa was retired just once in his five at-bats with two singles, a double, and two runs driven-in.
The lone bright spot for Corpus Christi was their two back-end pitchers Chris Cotton and Michael Freeman. The former LSU hurler, Cotton dazzled in his three innings of work. He allowed just four hits, one run, and struck out two RockHounds. Freeman threw in the eighth and gave up just one hit to the four batters he faced.
The Hooks look to earn a split in this four game set and a .500 road trip before heading back to Corpus Christi to take on San Antonio and Frisco. First pitch is set for Friday night at 7:00. The pregame will begin at 6:40 on NewsRadio 1360 KKTX.
