Tulsa Drillers News Release
Six shut-down innings by Tulsa Drillers starter Brock Stewart (1-1, 1.57 ERA) and a pair of triples by shortstop Drew Maggi were enough to lead the Drillers past the Arkansas Travelers for the second consecutive night, this time by a score of 9-2.
Stewart, the Dodgers sixth-round selection in the 2014 draft, put up his third consecutive quality start, going six innings in the ball-game. Stewart only allowed four Travs to reach base on the night, all the while recording 8 strikeouts. The only run that came against him was an unearned run in the sixth inning.
Stewart did escape damage early in the game as in the 2nd inning, the Travs had runners on second and third with only 1 out following a sacrifice bunt from Alex Yarbrough. Stewart was able to wiggle out of the jam thanks to a base-running mistake from Jabari Henry, who was caught too far off third base following a strikeout of Anthony Bemboom. Henry was tagged out after a brief rundown between third base and home plate.
Drew Maggi led off the next inning for the Drillers and connected for his first triple of the night on a shot to right field. He trotted home on a single by Paul Hoenecke, giving the Drillers the 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
Tulsa plated two more runs on a two-out double from Willie Calhoun in the top of the fourth inning, stretching their lead to 3-0.
The top of the fifth looked a lot like the top of the third, with a leadoff triple from Maggi followed by an RBI single from Hoenecke. This time Hoenecke would also come around to score on a sacrifice fly from Kyle Farmer to give the Drillers a commanding 5-0 lead.
Arkansas scratched a run off in the bottom of the 6th, but the Drillers responded nicely with the bottom of the order producing once again. Hoenecke got the 7th inning started with a leadoff walk, and after advancing to second base on a wild pitch, he came around to score on Kyle Farmer's single, giving the Drillers a 6-1 advantage.
Tulsa reliever Ralston Cash allowed a run to score in the bottom of the 7th inning on a balk, but the Drillers responded in nice fashion late in the game to put this one away for good.
Tulsa batted around in the ninth inning, including a stretch of five consecutive batters reaching base. Hoenecke scored for the third time on the evening, and the Drillers lead was stretched to a commanding 9-2, which would be the final score of the game.
Lefty-reliever Grant Dayton pitched the final two innings for the Drillers, recording five strikeouts, four of which caught Travs batters looking.
Tulsa returns home after their series with the Travs for an 8-game home-stand that begins on Saturday night, as the Drillers welcome the Springfield Cardinals to ONEOK Field for the first time of the 2016 season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM, as Chris Anderson (2-1, 4.50 ERA) gets the ball for the Drillers opposite Trey Nielson (2-2, 4.56 ERA) for Springfield.
