Memphis Redbirds News Release

Memphis, Tenn. - 1B Gary Burnham singled with one out in the eighth inning to break up Pat Mahomes' bid for a perfect game, but it was not enough to avoid defeat in the season's final game, as the Nashville Sounds topped the Redbirds 5-0 Monday afternoon.

Nashville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first off Memphis starter Alan Benes, getting an RBI single from 1B Carlos Rivera and scoring again when SS Freddy Sanchez scampered home when Rivera was caught stealing by C Jason Motte.

Nashville padded its lead with solo home runs in the second, fourth and seventh innings, while Mahomes cruised through the Redbirds lineup, striking out six in his 7.2 innings of work. After Burnham's eighth-inning single, Mahomes got LF John Gall to fly out before giving way to LHP Chris Fussell. Fussell retired RF Colin Porter to end the eighth, and escaped the ninth unscathed despite giving up a leadoff infield single to Motte -- his first Triple-A hit -- and plunking SS Bo Hart with two outs.

1B Carlos Rivera had a game-high three hits in three trips for Nashville, while LF Tony Alvarez and 3B Luis Figueroa each notched a pair of hits. The 'Birds had just three baserunners in the game, and only Motte reached as far as second base.

The announced attendance at the game was 16,332, pushing the Redbirds' season attendance average to a minor league-high 10,437, narrowly eclipsing the Sacramento RiverCats, who averaged 14,432 fans per game.
