Isotopes announce player awards for 2004
September 6, 2004 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Albuquerque Isotopes announced their 2004 player awards before this afternoon's game with first baseman Larry Sutton earning top honors as the team's Most Valuable Player. The awards were voted on by players and coaches.
Sutton earned team MVP after batting a team-high .370 with 21 homers and 71 RBI while battling numerous injuries. A year after missing the whole season with a knee injury, Sutton's 21 HR were third best on the team and he just missed having the required at bats to qualify for the Pacific Coast League's batting title. Sutton earned PCL Hitter of the Week honors for the week of May 3-9, was named Topps' PCL Player of the Month for May, and received a call up by the Florida Marlins from May 20-June 3.
Third baseman Joe Dillon, who also missed all of 2003, won the PNM Power Hitter Award with a team-leading 28 home runs. Dillon's combined total of 37 homers (nine at Double-A Carolina) was fifth best in all of Minor League Baseball. Left-handed pitcher Michael Tejera was named as the Isotopes Pitcher of the Year, after compiling an 8-4 record and 3.97 ERA in 22 games.
Derek Wathan won the team's Mr. Hustle award for the second consecutive year after playing every position except pitcher and catcher during the season. Wathan played in 104 games, batting .304 with a career-high 11 HR. Wathan finished second on the team with 15 stolen bases. Outfielder Ryan Christenson was named the Isotopes best defensive player for his outstanding play in center field.
In an award selected by Isotopes management, Outfielder Mike Colangelo was named the Most Community-Minded Player as a result of his contributions in the Albuquerque community, including hospital visits, youth clinics, and speaking engagements.
