Wheeling Nailers News Release
READING, PA- The Wheeling Nailers were playing their fourth game in five days on Sunday afternoon, and they left everything they had on the ice at Santander Arena. Hunter Fejes and notorious Reading Royals destroyer Cody Wydo each scored a pair of goals, and Sean Maguire made 32 saves, as the Nailers picked up the 5-1 road triumph.
The Nailers had a strong first period, as they killed off three Reading power plays, while scoring a pair of goals. The first tally came off of a turnover, as Jeff Taylor stepped out of the penalty box, forcing the puck away from the Royals. Hunter Fejes pounced on the opportunity, flying down the right side of the ice, and whipping a shot inside of the left post. Later in the stanza, Wheeling got a bit of a gift, as a Reading defender banked the puck off of goaltender John Muse and in over the goal line. The marker was credited to Cody Wydo.
The visitors increased their lead with a goal during the final minute of period two. Reid Gardiner floated a pass out of the right corner of his own zone to Cody Wydo in center ice. The Royals were making a line change, leaving the entire ice surface open for Wydo, who broke away, and buried a shot along the ice.
Wheeling's power play converted at the 6:21 mark of third period, as Cam Brown found Dylan Zink, who stepped into the high slot, and drove a wrist shot into the top-right corner of the net. Reading's Ryan Penny broke up the shutout bid by crashing down the middle and potting a shot on the right side. Fejes notched his second of the afternoon with 8:50 to go, batting his own rebound into the cage to put the finishing touches on the 5-1 victory.
Sean Maguire earned the win in goal for the Nailers, turning away 32 of the 33 shots he faced. John Muse was the losing netminder for the Royals, as he surrendered five goals on 36 shots.
The Nailers will play three games at home next weekend, beginning with a Frosty Friday at 7:05 against the Reading Royals. Saturday is also a 7:05 tilt against the Royals on Star Wars Night. Wheeling will wear special jerseys, and the first 2,500 fans will receive a free light saber. Sunday is Family Funday, featuring a post game skate with the team (even-numbered players), as well as Pups & Pucks, in which fans can bring their dogs to the game.
