Hunter Fejes (2g) opened the scoring halfway through the first. Cody Wydo (2g) scored the second and third goals of the game, making it 3-0 late in the second. John Muse denied 31 shots.
Sean Maguire had 32 denials.
The Royals enter a three-game road trip and are next at home on Dec. 6 vs. Wheeling. The next three Royals home games are against the Nailers.
Wheeling scored two goals in the first period, including a short-handed goal from Wydo, to take a 2-0 lead after the first. The Royals were 0-for-3 on the man up in the first period. Reading also failed to score on three power-play attempts in the second.
With 39.7 seconds to go in the second, Wydo received a pass for a breakaway and slammed it under Muse to make it 3-0.
Dylan Zink made it 4-0 with a power-play marker at 6:21 of the third.
Penny struck for Reading's only goal three minutes later. While falling to the left post, he put it against the grain to the top right shelf, assisted by Adam Schmidt. Penny is on a four-game point streak (3g, 1a).
