Wheeling Nailers News Release
Wheeling, WV ¨C The Wheeling Nailers fell in their last away game of the 2009-2010 regular season in a 5-1 setback at the Toledo Walleye Saturday night at the Lucas County Arena.
Things were looking good for the Nailers as they dominated play in the 1st period and took the early 1-0 lead. Jon D¡¯Aversa teed one up from the center-point on the power play and blasted a slapper of goalie Alec Richards¡¯ right leg-pad and into the cage for his 6th goal of the season and 3rd in his last three games. Wheeling outshot Toledo 15-7 in the opening frame.
Jon D¡¯Aversa has been blasting away lately from the blue-line and has three power play goals in his last three games for the Nailers.
Wheeling appeared to have all the momentum after an energetic and intense first period but the Walleye would turn the tables on the Nailers in the second period.
Toledo would rally for a three goal outburst in just 87 seconds early in the 2nd period. After Wheeling nicely killed off four minutes of power play time, the Walleye got it cranked up beginning with Sal Peralta¡¯s 12th goal of the season at 5:31 into the 2nd. Mike Hedden was able to jam in a friendly bouncing puck that hit off a Nailer back-checker on the centering pass, then off Berkhoel and then back to Toledo for the goal to make it 2-1. And just 13 seconds after Maxime Tanguay¡¯s shot from the left-wing was re-directed by Akim Aliu past a screen Adam Berkhoel to give Toledo the 3-1 lead in the 2nd period.
The Walleye closed the scoring with a pair of goals in the 3rd period by Tanguay on the power play cutting into the slot and by Adam Keefe racing up the middle to blast home a slapper.
Toledo outshot the Nailers 30-28 on the game. Wheeling went 1-for-5 on the power play while Toledo was 1-for-4. The Nailers won the season series over their North Division rivals 4 games to 2.
Wheeling wraps up the season next weekend with a pair of home games against Reading And Cincinnati.
