Jackals suffer first ever ECHL road shutout
March 27, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals suffered their first ever road shutout in ECHL play on Saturday night, losing 5-0 to the Trenton Devils at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, N.J. The loss, combined with a Gwinnett victory over Florida, kept the Jackals from clinching a playoff spot.
Tony Zancanaro rebounded from his overtime goal against the Jackals on Friday night with a goal at 2:47 of the first period on Saturday to make it 1-0, tipping in a rebound from a Justin Coutu shot for the early advantage.
Dave Leaderer added to that lead, beating Jackals goaltender Andy Chiodo five-hole on a backdoor feed from Matt Vokes at 4:41 of the first, making it 2-0.
Matt Vokes notched an unassisted goal at 12:18, picking off an errant Jackals' pass and slapping a puck over Chiodo's glove in the second period to give the Devils a 3-0 lead.
At 8:14 of the third period, Dan Eves converted on a give-and-go play with Jack Combs with the Devils on the power play, upping Trenton's lead to 4-0.
Kevin Cormier capped the Devils night with a goal at 18:46 of the final session, his first point of the season. The goal beat Julien Ellis, who made five saves on six shots after relieving Chiodo after the Devils' fourth goal.
Dave Caruso made 28 saves on 28 shots to record the Devils' first shutout of the season. He also had an assist on the game and improved to 7-2-0-0 against the Jackals this season. Caruso's overall record increased to 19-20-1-1.
Chiodo suffered the loss, falling to 8-5-3-0. He made 24 saves on 28 shots before being replaced by Ellis.
The Devils are now 9-3-0-0 against the Jackals this season.
Elmira's record dropped to 35-24-6-3. The Jackals can still clinch a playoff birth by gaining one point throughout the rest of the season or having the Gladiators lose one point.
The Devils improved to 31-29-4-5, staying three points back of the Toledo Walleye for the final playoff spot.
Elmira, which had scored a goal in each of its first 104 regular season road games in ECHL play, had not been shut out since failing to score a goal on Jan. 9, 2009 against Johnstown.
The Jackals take on the Devils on Sunday in Trenton at 4:00 p.m.
