Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Boise, ID - In a Saturday night contest, the Victoria Salmon Kings and Idaho Steelheads met in the finale of a three-game set at the Qwest Arena in Boise, ID. The Salmon Kings started Glenn Fisher in net, while the Steelheads countered with Richard Bachman between the pipes.
The Steelheads opened the scoring in the contest at the 8:43 mark. Idaho captain Marty Flichel won a faceoff back to the left point where Brendan Milnamow fired the puck on net. Fisher made the initial save, but the rebound came out to Matt McKnight in front of the crease who slid the puck into the net around the Victoria goaltender for his 14th goal of the season. Dirk Southern knotted the game at 1-1 at 15:05. Wes Goldie skated the puck along the right wing boards and fired a hard pass across the ice to a streaking Southern who redirected the puck past Bachman's blocker for his eighth goal of the year. Idaho regained their one-goal advantage just 1:40 later while shorthanded. On a two-on-one rush into the offensive zone John Swanson fed the puck across the ice to Evan Barlow who quickly snapped a shot over the right pad of a sprawling Fisher. Barlow's 31st goal of the season gave the Steelheads a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Idaho tallied the lone goal of the middle frame at the 18:41 mark. Kael Mouillierat streaked down the left wing with the puck and quickly wrapped around behind the net to sneak the puck across the goal line between Fisher's left skate and the post. Mouillierat's marker was his second of the season, and gave the home side a 3-1 advantage heading into the third period
John Swanson extended the Steelheads' lead to a 4-1 score just 2:12 into the final frame. The Idaho forward picked up a loose puck at the left offensive blue line and took a shot from the faceoff dot that beat Fisher under his right arm into the net. Swanson's goal was his 22nd of the year. Brandan Kushniruk rounded out the scoring for the game by recording the 5-1 tally at the 15:22 mark. Steelheads 5 Salmon Kings 1.
Victoria went 0/3=0.0% on the power play while Idaho finished 1/2=50.0%. The Steelheads outshot the Salmon Kings 35-24.
The Salmon Kings now return home to host the Utah Grizzlies for the final series of the regular season with matches on Wednesday, March 31st, Friday, April 2nd, and Saturday, April 3rd.
