Wheeling Nailers News Release
Bryan Ewing scored his team leading 29th goal of the year and goalie Jordan Alford settled in nicely in his ECHL debut after a shaky start but the Nailers fell short in their bid for a perfect weekend with a 4-1 loss at the Elmira Jackals.
Alford has been serving his 2nd stint as the Nailers backup goalie but had yet to receive any game action since he played in 7 games at the beginning of the year with Flint, MI of the IHL. The R.P.I. product was college roommates with Andrew Lord. Alfrod allowed 2 goals in the opening 6 minutes as the Jackals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. But after that he was only touched for one more tally (the Jackals 4th goal was an empty-netter with 1: 59 remaining).
Elmira was outshooting Wheeling 16-1 at one point in the 1st period but Alford made several dazzling stops to keep his team within striking distance including two saves back to back when Elmira raced forward with a 3-on-0 breakaway following a Nailers giveaway.
After the slow start the Nailers got it going in the 2nd and 3rd periods and Bryan Ewing tipped an Elmira pass and raced forward up the right wing with a 2-on-1 rush. Ewing took the shot himself and blasted it home for his team leading 29th of the year also giving him an ECHL leading 56 points on the unassisted tally to pull the Nailers to within 2-1.
Wheeling had several good opportunities when they were trailing 2-1 and later when it was 3-1 but Jackals goalie Michael Teslak had a fine performance in net for the win turning aside drive after drive.
The Nailers went an impressive 2-1-0 on their road trip which saw them play at 3 different teams in 3 consecutive days. Wheeling lengthened their lead in first place in the ECHL North and remain 5 points ahead of 2nd place Cincinnati and 6 points ahead of 3rd place Johnstown.
The Nailers get a few days off following their tiring trip and Wheeling will be back on the road for the finale of their 4 game away stretch Friday night at the Reading Royals.
Wheeling has another great promotion lined up for their next home game on Saturday, January 31st in their 8:05 game vs. the Mississippi Seawolves on Coach Reno Bobblehead night. The first 2500 fans get the Coach Reno bobblehead and the Nailers will be honoring the legendary coach of the Steubenville Big Red football program as well as the Steubenville community.
