Wheeling Nailers News Release

KALAMZOO, MI --Mikael Bedard scored twice, while Tyler Murovich finished with three assists to lead the Wheeling Nailers to a 5-3 victory over the red-hot Kalamazoo Wings Sunday evening at Wings Stadium. The Nailers victory snaps a sixteen-game unbeaten streak for the Wings.

Wheeling opened the game's scoring at 4:13 of the period. After a shot from the boards on goal by Tim Crowder, Mikael Bedard picked up the rebound at the top of the crease. Bedard flipped the puck past the blocker of goaltender Riley Gill giving Wheeling the 1-0 lead.

The Nailers struck again with five seconds remaining in the opening period. Newcomer Branden DeFazio centered a feed in the high slot for Alex Grant. Grant took two steps toward the net and fired a hard wrist shot past Gill for the goal. Grant's marker was his third of the season, and gave the Nailers a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.

Wheeling continued to pour it on in the second, as Bedard posted his second goal of the game at 3:46. Nailers captain Dan Henningson fired a slapshot from the point, which was tipped in front by Bedard into the net to extend the lead to 3-0. Nearly three minutes later, the Nailers scored on the power play. Tim Crodwer banked the puck off the skate of Gill, which deflected on the backside of the crease to Sebastien Bisaillon who hammered it into the back of the net for the Nailers fourth goal of the game.

Trailing 4-0, Kalamazoo responded with a couple of quick strikes. A.j. Thelen fired a slapshot front the point which ripped past Wheeling goaltender Peter Delmas, to put the Wings on the board 4-1. Five minutes later, Patrick Asselin received a cross-crease feed, and stuffed the puck on the shortside post past Delmas to pull the Wings within two at the end of two periods.

The Nailers put a stop to the Wings momentum at 3:54 of third, as Andrew Orpik centered a feed in front to Kris Vernarsky, who slipped the puck through the five-whole of Gill, to give Wheeling a 5-2 lead. Trent Daavetilla scored a goal late in the game, but it would not be enough as the Nailers held on to earn the 5-3 road victory. Nailers outshot the Wings 36-29.
